Windows 7 Deletes Files From Wrong Directory
Hi there, I have a large collection of video media on a particular partition on my main hard disk. We'll call this drive M:\ Sorted in folders according to video series, the video files were located in multiple sub folders of a directory on M:\ eg. M:\Videos\series1 M:\Videos\series2 M:\Videos\series3 Earlier I wished to transfer all of my collection to a single directory so that I may organise it in a different way. I move all files from examples M:\Videos\series1 M:\Videos\series2 M:\Videos\series3 to (example) M:\Videos\unsorted I check inside this folder and confirm all my files have been moved as intended. I highlight all the empty directories inside M:\Video and delete them. (checking that my 'unsorted' folder is not highlighted) However, in the delete status box that appears, I notice the file count and total size growing and quickly cancel the operation. Back in my explorer window, my "unsorted" folder is still unselected and the folders I indicated for deletion are gone. However inside my unsorted folder, all my files are missing and the recycle bin only contains a few (maybe 20 of ~600) of the missing files. I'm running Recuva to restore my files, making sure to not use the partition in question as to not overwrite any data. I'm sure i'll be able to recover the data, but my question is this; Why has Windows 7 (Home Premium x64, 7600) removed files from the MFT (I know this is quick scans have found no evidence of previously existing files) that were in a completely different folder to the ones I specified? Thanks in advance, Connor

Just an update- using Piriform Recuva i've been able to recover the files, only without names. Which is quite important seeing as for 600+ episodes of TV from different seasons of different shows, renaming them is going to take an age. Can somebody please enlighten me as to why this has happened though?

I suggest you boot in Safe Mode, try to move and delete in Safe Mode. If the issue does not occur, I suspect that one of the background programs is the root cause. It may be related to your media applications.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hello, It has nothing to do with any media application. It happened to me on a Network drive at work. Any suggestions why?
