Windows 7 DNS server not responding
Please help. I have just changed my Broadband supplier from a private co. to Sky. Everything was working fine with my origional supplier,now my laptop won't connect WiFi with my router. I am OK if I use the "hard wire" connection. The error is "DNS server not responding" Things I have tried! Have taken my laptop to 2 other locations and had no problems connecting WiFi to their system. My son brought his laptop and his i phone to my house and both connected WiFi. Any help please and try and keep it simple. I have spent 3 hours with Sky techincial and they are stuck. They say it is "something in my laptop" that is blocking the connection. I am on Windows 7 and my laptop is 14 months old.

are you getting an ip? I would probably just change the DNS to a google public dns server as test. Set the dns server to 8.8.8.8 on your network card and leave the rest on autoconfigure.

Thanks for your help but it did not work. I have also tried the address 208.67.220.220 208.67.222.222 as suggested earlier in the forum. When I open the wireless icon I get " Sky Wireless Network Connected 2" but above it is "Sky No internet access" Is that any help. Hardwired is perfect. Everything was OK with my previous Broadband supplier. Have also checked that windows firewall is switched off. I have even tried switching off my own security. Any more suggestions.

Let me ask you few questions: You are connecting to the same router as when you use your wired connection? When you use wired it works? When you use same laptop anywhere else it works on wireless connection? My guess is that you have multiple wireless connections and one of them is higher on the list then your home connection and as result computer is always connecting to that connection. Try deleting all wireless connection from "manage wireless connection" Then disable wireless adapter in the "Device Manager" and reboot. After the reboot re-enable it and again and try connecting to your wireless router. If it still doesn't work then please run command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" and copy the results here.

Hi, these are my answers. When I changed to SKY broadband I had to use and install Their Router. So only my router has been changed. Tried my old router back but got NO SKy connections. Before I changed, everything worked. Now I can't get a wireless connection. Hard wire is OK I have tried everything that has been suggested up to now except "command Prompt" as i don't know where to find it and don't know if it is safe to do it. 2 other laptops have been tested in my house since I installed Sky and both have connected wireless. I have also taken my laptop to 2 other locations (one my son's who has Sky) and it has connected wireless with no problem. I AM OK IF I CONNECT WITH HARDWIRE. I have tried all the IP addresses given to me and at the moment my PC is set for auto on both IP and DNS. When I go into "Wireless Network Connection 2 Status" it reads IPV4 Connectivty - No Internet access. In the "Wireless Networ" it says "Connect using ATHEROS AR5B93 Wireless Network Adaptor" Sky are also stuck and say "something is stopping it working" I know that! Any more help please!

Hi, To avoid your SKY router blocking your wireless connection, I suggest resetting the router for a test. Meanwhile, please using your wired connection, then click Start button -> type CMD in the search box and press Enter. In the opening Command Prompt, type the following command: ipconfig /all > D:\wired.txt Don't close the Command Prompt window, change to wireless connection, then use the following command: ipconfig /all > D:\wireless.txt After that, please upload the txt file to SkyDrive or paste the results here. For DNS server follow the below steps and check for any errors listed in event viewer– 1.Click Start. Type cmd in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. 2.At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ipconfig /flushdns (there is a space between ipconfig and / ) It will show the message successfully flushed the DNS resolver cache. 3.At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ipconfig /registerdns (there is a space between ipconfig and / ) 4.At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ipconfig /all (there is a space between ipconfig and /) The ipconfig /all command displays Windows TCP/IP settings for all your network adapters. If your IP address for your Local Area Connection is either 0.0.0.0 or 169.x.x.x (where x is any number), then your computer is not getting an IP address from the router. If that is the case, try this: ·ipconfig /release in the command prompt and press ENTER ·ipconfig /renew in the command prompt and press ENTER Test it again by typing ipconfig /all to see what the address is? (If you are on a home router, it should start with either 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x or 10.x.x.x)

Sorry guys but after trying everything that both of you have suggested, it still won't connect wireless. If this is of any help, my son got it to work for 30sec, 4 days ago. It was to do with the DHCP. I also noticed in one of the actions I was doing it came up as "DHCP not enabled" is this what it should be? Also it came up with the 00.00.00.00. Is that any help. Any more help!

You have to run "Ipconfig /all" Then you will be able to see which ip address is assinged to your wired adapter (ethernet) Once you have your IP for wired you can simply go to your wireless connection and assign static IP. You may need to login to you router and try to change the channel on which it operates, maybe you are having conflict with your cordeless phone. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setup/wirelesstips.aspx for example here is what i have on my computer: C:\Users\Marko>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Computer01 Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : ed.shawcable.net Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : ed.shawcable.net Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 78-2B-CB-A0-04-B3 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::9527:8e7b:53aa:7de%14(Preferred) IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.100(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : December-26-11 9:19:29 AM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : January-09-12 9:19:29 AM Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled So based on what you find in your wired computer you can create a static IP on your wireless. IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.110 (just added 10 to the number found on the wired connection, rest just copy) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Hi Brano, thanks for your help and it was very easy to follow. I get the same numbers as you except for my ip address 192.168.0.3 Have done it all and it still not working. Interesting, when I go back into the wireless network the ip address numbers that I have put in and the subnet numbers are always missing!! Going to try and borrow a "USB plug in Modem"to see if that will resolve my problems. As you have suggested, could be a conflict between laptop and modem. The only difference I can see is on my "Wireless LAN Adaptor Wireless Network 2" the DHCP Enabled NO Is that any help. Dougal T

DHCP enabled simply means you are using static IP. I am not sure that things can work without subnet mask. You have to have a subnet mask for IPv4 to work. Since the static assignment didn't seem to work i would suggest you go back to the default settings where both IP and DNS are autodetected. Try reseting your router (modem) to default factory settings. Or at least turn it off for a few seconds and turn it back on. (that should force the router to update all entries) Try switching the chanel on the router (modem) sometimes even if you don't use cordless phones someone else around you might be on the same channel. If nothing else works then you should look into updating drivers for your network adapter.

Hi all, first of all let me thank everyone who assisted me with information of help to try and fix my fault. You are not going to believe the “fix”. I was a TV engineer before I retired so I started to think like an engineer. What is the only thing that has been changed since the change over to Sky? the Router! My problem was convincing Sky that the new router was faulty. This is what I did. I took my new router to my daughters home (also Sky) and plugged it in. Her PC worked, mine did not. I took her Router to my house, plugged it in, my Laptop worked WIRELESS with her Router. I phoned sky and told them what I had achieved and asked them to send me a New or different Router but they said the Router was Ok as it was working “other” units in my house. They would phone me back. Sky phoned back. This is the solution to my problem. The New router’s which Sky are supplying are “N” Routers the old ones were “G” Routers. “N” Routers are faster and require a Windows update to the Ethernet Driver Adaptor. This is an Optional Update so it is not undated automatically. I have done this and everything is not working fine. “I would have thought Sky would have known this and I am surely not the first one to have had this problem. My Laptop is only 15 months old. Hope this is of some help to any other person. Brano, you were right with your last remark, but I never did it!!!!!!! Thanks again for your help.George Tierney
