Windows 7 Causing Router to Reboot
I have a Verizon Fios Westell 9100 series router. When connecting to the router either via WiFi or ethernet, the router reboots shortly after the network location the first time the network location is identified. The router will then reboot intermittently. If the Windows 7 machine is powered off or the network connections are broken, router works fine for an XP machine and an iMac running OS X, so I don't think the router is bad. Prior to installing Windows 7, running Vista Business, this phenomenon would occur typically once at system boot or wake from sleep, then the connection would be stable.I have read threads suggesting diabling uPnP in the router but that doesn't change the situation.

Assuming DHCP is automatically assigning your IP addressing information, have you tried manually assign your IP address? Have you tried disabling IPv6? A couple of Vista related articles that might help point you in the right direction http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955084 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932134

Thanks, I will give those suggestions a try. To get up and running, I put a netgear router between my Windows 7 machine and the Fios router. No problems as of yet.

I followed suggestions to use static IP address and Windows 7 connection to router still causes Westell 9100 router to reboot. Wireless connection seems to result in more frequent reboots of router than direct ethernet connection.

HiHow you know router reboots? It is not possible W7 to make your router to reboot if router is OK and router power supply is stable, no matter how it is configured. If you are sure router hardware is ok, contact router manufacturer for help on router firmware update

Hi, Ken has provided links of two useful KB articles. I found that the Hyperlinks of the two addresses are incorrect, and may be Pattap has not read the articles. I suggest that you open the websites to access the articles. An ADSL router may restart occasionally after you install Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista (KB955084) An outdated network router may not function correctly when you use it together with new networking features in Windows Vista (KB932134) Arthur Xie - MSFT

If KB932134 applies, in addition to disabling IPV6, disable both Link-Layer Topology Discovery entries and see if that helps any with your issue. The only selected items you should have (similar to an XP SP1 setup) are: Client for Microsoft Networks File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

Thanks forthe feedback. Definitely an annoying problem. I'm beginning to wonder if theBroadcom wireless card is just not compatible with the Westellrouter.I know the router reboots because the lights go through the same cycle as when you perform a reboot throught he router configuration menu. It is possible it is a firmware issue as this has been replicated with another new Westell router. Thanks for correcting the links. I ran the router configuration test as noted in the KB and all tests were ok except the uPnP due to symmetric NAT. I had previously disabled IPV6 and set a static IP address as outlined in KB932134. I will disabling the Link-Layer Topology Discover entries and see if that helps. I'm at work now so I can't recall the actual name, but under the network properties, there is also at least one entry for the Kaspersky security program. Should I disable that as well?Pat

There must be an incompatibility between either Windows 7, or both my Broadcom 802.11g card and Broadcom Netlink Fast Ethernet card, and the Westell 9100 modem. No changes listed effectively corrected the problem. I turned off the wireless function of the Westell FIOS router and connected a Linksys WGR614 V7 router, LAN to LAN, disabled DHCP in the Linksys and all works fine. Thanks for the suggestions,Pat

Don't believe a PC can't cause a router to reboot no matter how it's configured.I have a problem very similar to yours.Just updated my Lenovo Netbook to Windows 7.Broadcom 100Mb Ethernet adapter connected to a Linksys RV042 (either directlyor via an intermediate switch). The Rv042 now reboots every time I attach the PC during IP aquisition viaDHCP. Disabling Network discovery and IPV6 in the adapter settings did nothing tofix the issue. Coding a fixed IP address is not realistic. I carry this Netbook everywhere and itmust attach to multiple networks on different IP subnets. J

I seem to have gotten past this problem. I disabled everything on the Ethernet and Wireless adapter from the Win 7 perspective except: IPV4 TCP/IP File and Print Sharing Client for MS Networking I also deleted the MAC Address IP reservations for the PC in the RV042 router. I rebooted the PC and it aquired an IP address via the Wired and Wireless adapters and did not cause the router to reboot. I then recreated the two MAC IP address reservation defintions in the RV042 router and the PC still aquires IP addresses without causing the router to reboot. I then enabled each item I disabled one by one on both adapters and rebooted each time I enabled an item fully expecting to have the router reboot when I enabled the culprit. I was able to enable everything I disabled and can no longer get the router to reboot. So I don't know what option actually caused the problem but the issue no longer exists for me. Fingers firmly crossed.
