Windows 7 Beta Backup Gets Error 0x80004001 Not Implemented
Attempting to run a full backup on my windows 7 beta PC to a Maxtor OneTouch 4 external hard drive starts and then promptly ends with the error message in the title. What's this about? I have been using the Maxtor Manager to back up my data files while I have had the beta installed, but now preparatory to installing the RC1 I need to be able to back up the entire system. I do not believe this is a problem with the Maxtor device, as backup/restore for data files using Maxtor manager works find and Backup/Restore under Vista did too. I originally thought that perhaps Windows 7 beta did not implement backup & restore, but it appears from these forums that it does. Can anyone give me some guidance about what to do next?Jim

Hi Jim, We recommend that you download and install the RC version, and see if the issue still occurs. Windows 7 Release Candidate Customer Preview Program Arthur Xie - MSFT

Thank you for your response. My difficulty is that I need to back up the hard drive created under the Beta in order to preserve my programs and data for restoration on the RC after doing the clean install. My objective is to get to the RC as soon as I can, but so far I have not been able to determine a reliable way to save programs and data for restoration. I suppose I shall simply have to go through the C:// directory and copy files and folders that are not obviously Microsoft's or part of the system on to my backup drive one by one, and then restore them in the same way after the RC runs.If you have any suggestions for a less labor-intensivesuggestion (I have three Beta computers running at home and in my office) I would welcome them. If there's nothing more to be done, because Backup/Restore actually was not implemented in the Beta, it would be helpful to know that, so I can buckle down and do the work of transferring the hundreds of files involved.Thank you.JimJim

SFOLaw, I think the problem is due Maxtor uses Volume Shadow Service (VSS) which contains some not implemented features under client OS's (I mean, there are many features implemented only for Server OS's). Javier Andrés Cáceres Alvis
