Windows 7 Backup Offline Files
Hi Everybody, I'm using the 'Offline Files' feature of Windows 7 to simply keep my data folders of my Laptop and my Desktop machine synchronized. My Laptop has the actual data, and my desktop is set to keep offline copies of it. Here is a pretty simple question: When using Windows Backup to backup my desktop computer (System Image + All Data), will this include the offline copies of my data folders? I made some softlinks to the network location of my laptop to have some handy folder names for my data folders, but it doesn't seem to back up my data though them: Backup skipped backing up \\laptop\Documents as it is not on local machine. Backup skipped backing up \\laptop\Mp3 as it is not on local machine. Will this stuff be backed up via the system image in c:\windows\csc\ ? Best Rainer

Hi Rainer, As your question, I would like to tell you that the files won't be backed even you make the system image. As the softlinks are just like shorcuts. To sync your machines, there are many different methods, Offline files is one option, you can also try online syncronization or other tools. To keep the two computers in sync, you can use the Briefcase in Windows 7. For more deatil, you can refer to the methods in the following KB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307885 Or the third party tools Allway Sync 10.0.2 or GoodSync, or online synchronization. To use the Online synchronization, you can refer to this link: http://www.labnol.org/internet/compare-windows-live-sync-mesh-and-skydrive/6166/ If you use other methods except the Offline option to sync your machines, you should be able to backup files directly.I hope this can help you. So Backup will skip the c:\windows\csc\ folder? What if I make a hardlink there? That should work, right?

Hi Rainer,I think the folder (c:\windows\csc\) will be included in the System image, but I am sure the hardlink won't work either. Whatever hardlink or softlink, they are both not the real files, they just like a link. If you want to sync your two machines, there are many methods you can try. if you want to backup all files, it's better to disable the Offline option, then make backup, or some folders willn't be backed up. I suggest you to use other method to sync your two machines.Hope this helps. John
