Windows 7 Backup Error 0x80780040 on Newly-Formatted HD
I've been having issues with Windows 7 Backup. Initially, I had an 80GB SSD as the system drive (marked as C:) and a 1TB HD partitioned into a 150GB D: drive (for backups) and the remainder as the E: drive (for other data). Backup worked fine for a month or so, then stopped working, saying that the D: drive was no longer a valid backup location. I did a lot of troubleshooting, but couldn't get backups to complete. Finally, I decided to reformat the hard drive so that D: is blank. With the blank drive, I can initiate the backup, but it fails midway through. The error is 0x80780040: "The backup storage location is invalid. You cannot use a volume that is included in the backup as a storage location." After the backup fails, if I go back into the backup utility, the D: drive is no longer valid (it says that removable drives cannot be used for system images). I've read that the backup problem can be caused by services being run from the drive being backed up to, but since the target drive has nothing on it, I don't understand why the backup utility is still failing. Can anyone offer any suggestions to fix the problem? Or should I just give up and use an external (not built in) backup program? Thank you!

Hi, Can you back up small files or folder to D: drive? Please note before the backup process started, there is a check box before "Include a system image of drives(C:)" when setting up the backup. If so, every backup will include a huge system image which is created in a seperate folders on the external drive for the machines being backed up. So, simply uncheck the the box, everything will be ok. So are we running out of space for large backups that take the remainder of the 150gb partition?

If the box was checked, backup and restore will create seperate folders on the external drive for the machines being backed up. However the system image is placed outside the folders and the rest of the backup is placed inside the folder. Backup and restore only allows for 1 system image to be stored on a drive. When you try to backup a second machine, the backup starts to write to the correct folder. When Backup trys to save the system image, it finds already exists and the error mentioned is presented. I just created two system images on the same drive. Even so, 150GB for image backups is too small.
