Windows 7 Backup 0x80070057 Error
Windows 7 Home Premium Dual boot Visa and Windows 7 (C: drive and G: drive respectively) Backup to external hard drive (159 GB of free space) I have lost the capability of using Windows 7's Backup and Retore program. I originally had Vista and then partitioned my hard drive so that I could install and dual boot with Windows 7. I had no problems installing Windows 7 (became the G: drive because of other partitions). Everything worked fine when I first installed Windows 7, including Backup and Restore. I used the full retail version of Windows 7 (32 bit) to install the OS on a blank partition. When I run the Backup and Restore program I get a almost blank window - all that is in the window are the words "Backup and Restore File". I also have a system tray message stating "Check your backup (important)" but when I click on this message to access the backup program I get a message stating "The parameter is incorrect" /"Try again" /"Change backup options". Clicking on "Change backup options" gives me a further error message stating "The backup application could not start due to an internal error: The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)". First I tried running sfc /scannow from the command prompt (with administrator privileges) but that did not fix the problem. I then ran chkdks /f and this did not fix the problem. So I used the "upgrade" option on my Windows 7 installation disk to "repair" my Windows 7 installation. It took about 1 hour to go through this process but it did not cure the problem. As I can't run the Backup and Restore program I cannot even start again and create another image. Has anybody got any idea what I should do next?

Thanks for responding. I have already tried every relevant suggestion in that thread , even added the following to the registry: Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MASCHINE > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Windows > System (Create System by yourself if it's not there) Add DWORD: CopyFileBufferedSynchronousIo and set it's value to 1. My region is set to English so the .(dot) issue is not relevant. I can't even run Backup and Restore after a "repair" of Window 7 OS and so there appears to be something outside the Windows OS that is causing the problem. When Backup and Restore worked (a couple of months ago) I managed to create an image on the external (usb) hard drive without a problem. Does MS have a Fix It for this problem?

File Backup fails with the following error: The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057) This error is caused by a bug in File Backup where if you don't back up at least one file during the full backup, every backup after that fails. The workaround is to go through the Backup wizard again and choose a new full file backup at the very end. This is my reference. Please make sure that you have all your Windows updates installed. If they are not, please install them all and check if this solve your problem. If this does not help, please wait for a MSFT (Microsoft employee) for help. I have installed all updates for Window 7 Home Premium. I cannot run the Backup and Restore application (as mentioned earlier) and hence cannot use the wizard to start again.

After spending hours trying to fix this problem I resorted to using the Windows 7 Recovery disk that I had created when I first installed Windows 7 and used this to access an earlier image to restore my computer to the date when I was able to create an image. Fortunately all my data, including Outlook files, were on a second drive which did not have my operating system and so few programs were affected (mostly program updates which could easily be re-installed). Hence the lesson is (until Microsoft fix this problem) is to install a second drive and ensure all your data is stored and directed to this drive (use your program settings), create a recovery disk, backup an image to a non-operating system hard drive, and update this regularly so that your computer can be restored to a bug-free condition if necessary.

The "Create a system Image" backup software DOES NOT WORK!!! Microsoft DOES NOT CARE!!!!! Obviously Vista and Windows 7 can't support backup. Microsoft has failed and ripped me off twice. I have spent weeks of time dealing with the consequences. Search the Internet and you'll find soo many people on all types of computers with fresh clean installations that have this problem. Vista's backup failed and NEVER worked. MS support tried to work with me and after 3 months of every level of tech support could not fix the problem, they told me the answer was to wait for Windows 7 for the fix. My Vista system had many major meltdowns. Having no backup or repair disk I was not able to recover and every few months I needed to spend a day rebuilding the operating system. I resisted paying $100 for an upgrade to fix a problem that should have worked in Vista. Desperation must be Microsoft's marketing plan. I broke down and bought Windows 7 Pro, installed all the updates and ran the backup "Create a system Image". It backed up to a Blu-Ray disk. At the end of the backup, Windows asked if I wanted to create a "System Repair Disk"? I selected to create one on a DVD in the Blu-Ray burner. It FAILED giving me the error number I will remember as long as I live, 0x80070057. I tried this again on the DVD burner and the same error occurred. I've tried a few of the fixes posted on-line and none worked so Microsoft has Flunked again. I don't expect Microsoft to fix this problem. They are quitters and as the Donald would say "Your fired". It's time to move on. Has anyone used a backup software that has restored Windows 7 or Vista from a major corruption? I tried Acronis and it backed up but would not restore Vista. There were other issues that makes me not trust Acronis. I've considered Retrospect, has anyone used it?

I have had mixed results with Acronis and don't trust the program. Even though I had verified the image file and backed up to an external hard drive, when I came to restore the image it failed with a message stating that the image was corrupted! This has happened a few times on different computers. I have not tried Retrospect and so cannot comment on its integrity. I now use EASEUS Todo Backup Home 2.0 (free for home use) which appears to be okay but as I have only started using the progam I cannot vouch for its integrity. I would be interested to hear from other users of this image backup program, especially if they have restored on dual boot computers (Vista and Windows 7).
