Windows 7 Backup - exclude library
In Windows 7 Backup, is there a way to exclude a particular library, rather than selecting the libraries that you want to include? The problem is that we have added a library which is from a network drive, and so it should not be backed up. Windows 7 backup is smart enough to not back it up, but it produces a warning each time, and we do not want to see the warning each time.To get the warning to go away, in Windows 7 Backup you can select which folders/libraries you want to include (and obviously do not select the network library etc), but this is not very good because you would hope that when a user adds more libraries then they will automatically be included in the backup. Therefore, it would be better to be able to indicate which libraries to exclude, rather than which ones to include.Any suggestions?

You may open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and Restore, click “Change settings”. Select the location you would like to back up to and click Next. Then select “Let me choose” and click Next. You can exclude any libraries or folders as our wish.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Arthur, the steps you have inmentioned seem to only let you choose which folders to explicitly "include" - instead (for the reasons I mentioned in my initial post), I would like to be able to select the folders to explicitly "exclude". The solution you have mentioned is the one I already know about - the problem with this is that when the user adds more folders, they will not be included in the backup, therefore you need to "exclude" rather than "include" Can anyone pleaase advise?

Can you put unwanted on X: drive? and not select it? Following that line of thinking....

The problem is that the files already are effectively on an "X: drive", and windows complains becasue it is part of a library - please see original post at the top for full description Any other thoughts/ideas?

In Mac Pro Windows 7 I have to admit that as a home user, I've never used Backup exept for (couple of in house computers) System Image to external every 3 months or so. In Mac Pro Snow Leopard side, do clone to other 1/2 of external, not using Time Machine app. I recently asked about PlayReady which is of no use to me and is mandatory download if using Media Center and guess that these forums are not a place to ask for improvements. So question is: as in your case, where does a person make a request for improvement to Microsoft software when they know it would be beneficial to customers of Microsoft products? Another thought - could you make Backup and Restore shortcut to .bat, .vbs which Disabled or Offlined Z: to user then went into backup?

Hi joseph.renzi, Please do the following steps to exclude a library that you do not want to be backed up: 1. Open Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and Restore 2. Click on "Change settings" 3. Select the same target as before and click Next. 4. Click on "Let me choose" 5. Expand User data -> <<UserName>>'s libraries 6. Observe that the library that you want to exclude is currently included (i.e the checkbox next to it is checked) 7. Uncheck the checkbox next to the library. This way the library gets excluded.
