Windows 7 Backup & Restore will not start
Recently upgraded to Windows 7 Pro. When I attempt to start the Backup & Restore function nothing happens - the restore center window does not open. I have verified that the WB, the VSC, the RPC and the MSSCP are started, and set to automatic. I have attempted with a "clean boot" - no luck. I have run the "scannow" function with no errors. I have verified that the desired backup HDD can read and write files. I have searched these and other forums for days and do not find any similar circumstance. I am logged on as an administrator and am the only user. Will be very grateful for an effective solution! Tom

Hi, Thanks for the post! What do you mean the Backup & Restore function nothing happens ? Is it gray or no response? What function do you want to use? Set up backup or recover the system settings? Please provide the steps that you did and give us a screenshot. Also refer to the Backup and Restore FAQ. I am experiencing the same problem. I click "Backup and Restore" from the System and Security sub-section of Control Panel, click on either "Backup your computer" or "Restore data, files, or computer from a backup" in the search results of "backup" in the windows "Search Program or Files" feature. All do absolutely nothing (in answer to the first response to your post.) Absolutely nothing in the simple sense of the phrase -- no window opens, no spinner spins, focus doesn't switch. It is as if I had not clicked anything. My computer is about three months old. I have installed trial versions of a few backup programs, and have uninstalled them (Acronis, Genie timeline, zmanda.) I thought maybe one of them hosed up the native backup. I performed a system restore from a couple of weeks back that brought the native backup window back again shortly. But I un-installed one more program, and updated my mcafee virus scanner, and now the native backup is not working again. I checked Event Logs, but didn't find anything that indicated to me a clear problem with the native backup program. I don't remember how, but once today I got the backup to actually run by clicking something, but I couldn't bring up the screen to configure it. During the brief time that I could see the backup control panel today, I could see that I had canceled that brief backup today. So it seems it is the visual control panel portion of the backup system that is not appearing. A mystery! (And a frustrating one, but I had finally settled on the decision to use native backup, un-installed all those third party trial versions, but now I can't get to the native version.)

In my case, the problem seems to have been Acronis 2011, which is documented in another thread here, and in their own forums. The utility in this link restored the native windows 7 backup control panel to working condition: http://kb.acronis.com/content/14741\ Of course if you had not installed acronis 2011, I don't think this would help you. I had to import it from regedit. I got errors when I ran it from explorer.

When appling the patch (even in admin mode), I had an error message like : " Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes." so I had to take ownership and grant full control permissions to me for this key : HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B98A2BEA-7D42-4558-8BD1-832F41BAC6FD}\Instance\InitPropertyBag after that, I took care to restore ownership to the SYSTEM and remove permissions to me.

I'm using Acronis True Image WD Edition, have the problems described above, but don't have a key called HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B98A2BEA-7D42-4558-8BD1-832F41BAC6FD}\Instance\InitPropertyBag. Does anyone have a cure?
