Windows 7 Backup
Hi, I am trying to back my computer up to a server running windows 2003 but I keep getting this error message; Windows Backup encountered a problem while determining additional locations of one of the users included in backup. Details: Bitlocker drive encryption cannot be used becuase critical Bitlocker system files are missing or corrupted. Use Windows Startup Repair to resotre these files to your computer.Unfortunately I try to isolate the problem by using windows startup repair but it could find any missing files. I also have windows 7 on my laptop and it backup no problem to the server, so I am not sure whats going on.Any help would be appreciatedCheers Conrad

Hi Conrad, There are two options for backup: 1, Let Windows choose (Recommend) 2, Let me choose The default Windows Backup settings (Let Windows choose (Recommend)) includes an image of Windows startup and system files on the backup. But if the Windows system disk is using Bitlocker drive encryption protected, but the backup is not. The backup process will failed and getting the above message. Now, I suggest you choose the option (Let me choose), and choose which files you need to backup and uncheck the checkbox: Include a system image of Drivers (C:) in What do you want to back up window to perform a backup on the computer to solve this issue. In Winodws 7, backup includes creating a system image if you "Let Windows choose". If your system image is encrypted by BitLocker, backup cannot create image for it. Therefore, if you would like to backup system image, please decrypt, or select "Let me choose" and uncheck the image backup.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi Betty and Arthur, I have selected the Let me choose option and unselected the check box for create system image, however I still get the same error message. I have looked in control panel and bitlocker drive encryption is turned off. The only thing I can think of is that I upgrades from windows 7 build 7100 to theRTM version instead of doing a clean install. The thing is I'd rather do a clean install as a last resort so any other suggestions would be appreciated.Kind RegardsConrad

Hi Castlemainegold,I stored all the files I could and then did a fresh install, which fixed the problem. It's not much of a solution especially if you have alot of files but there seems to be issues with the upgrade optionCheers Conrad

Hi,Thanks for reporting this issue! We have been seeing considerable number of hits for this error and are unable to get a local repro for this. Really appreciate ifyou couldgive usthe following details to investigate this issue. 1. Which build are you running? Where did you install this build from? Is it a clean install or an upgrade?2. Screenshot of your disk management UI. Run-> diskmgmt.msc3. Contents of <<SystemDrive>>\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup4. Contents of <<SystemDrive>>\Users\<<UserName>>\Appdata\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries. Replace <<UserName>> with every user on your machine. Note:This path is hidden. Please enable hidden files in Explorer before navigating to them. These files when double clicked will open the actuallibraries. But do not worry; they are only the library definition files and are small in size. Please zip and email2, 3 and 4and info required in 1 to me at sneham_at_microsoft_dot_com (Remove underscores and replace words with characters). Thanks a lot!-Sneha[MSFT]

Hi Sneha It seems my problem has gone away... though I have no idea why. I haven't changed anything...through there may have been updates. When I was compiling the info you asked for I found that there was a log file but it was empty. I deleted everything in that directory and then proceeded to try the backup expecting it to fail. However it worked! So thanks anyway! Cheers A
