Windows 7 Backup
I have been trying to have Windows 7 perform backup of libraries - personal folders, system image, & outlook. It runs for about an hour and then fails with the error 0x8078012D. If I remove the Outlook folder and try again It runs for about an hour and fails with the error 0x81000037. The first error points to a problem with either the source or the destination disk and for me to do a chkdsk /R on both, which I have done (on several occasions) and the report returned no errors found on either of them. If I remove System Image from the fold the backup runs ok and completes, defeating the purpose. Also I have noted that backup will not backup programs or any files in the registry which form part of those programs, meaning if a crash happens I have to re-install those programs from scratch. Is there a program that will backup the programs and their files in the registry which does not cost an arm, and a leg? I have dealt with microsoft on this issue, and in one instance while supposedly "Cleaning" the Partition "G:" he cleaned the entire disk, F, G, H, wiping the partitions and ALL of their files. some of those files were the program installation files which were purchased from the net (No CD copy) the registration or lisence keys and Proof of Purchase were all in the individual folders. they have not been retreived. Now MS is telling me to do a fresh install of Windows 7 to try and overcome the original problem but this will remove the programs completely. the providers will not talk to me unless I can give them a receipt number, so thanks to MS I will lose the programs. back to the original problem, is there a way to backup the programs?

Hi Keith Austin, Thanks for the post! Based on the description, currently, you want to backup the installed programs, am I correct? If so, I'm afraid there's no such a built-in feature to do that. Because when installing program, there're many directories involved. It's not easy to find every directories, no mention many registry directories. Therefore, you can backup the installation files firstly, after reinstall Windows 7, reinstall those programs as well. Additionally, there should be some CD/DVDs if you buy some softwares, it's easier for a reinstallation. There is no way to back up programs. You need to complete the system image backup. That preserves a snapshot of the entire drive including programs. It is useful to have the data backup as it preserves all but the applications. Both are needed depending on the type of recovery you need when repairing the system from a catastrophic failure. When you click Start\Control Panel\System and Security\Backup and Restore and look in the left pane, you will see create a system image. Use an external hard drive as the target for the image. Your application installation files that you say were deleted should have been backed up when you removed "system image" and a data backup completed. That did happen before you "cleaned" partititons, yes? Are you comfortable using disk management?

There is no way to back them up because in the registry and elsewhere within \windows there are many references to the program. When Windows is gone, all those references are also gone, and if you restored a backup of a program without also restoring a backup of the copy of Windows it was installed under, it wouldn't work. But there is an occasional exception to that. There are a few self-contained programs without those references within \windows. Those exceptions are mostly small and simple programs. So from a practical standpoint, you can forget about the exceptions, and just go with Nano Warp's statement above, "There is no way to back up programs." Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP
