Windows 7 BSOD
Hello, I'm using Windows 7, 32 bit, and I've been having BSOD's in a frequent fashion over the past weeks. I restored my system last weekend to a previous image that belonged to 23rd August when I didn't have these issues, but after a couple of days without BSODs, I've had one again today, and probably there will be many more to come. The BSOD happened the day after I got all the Windows Updates, so can it be related to one of the updates? Any help will be greatly appreciated. The minidump file showed an UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M (1000007f) stop error being caused by the atikmdag.sys. The atikmdag.sys is dated Aug. 17, 2009 so update this driver by installing the latest driver for the display adapter. The netio.sys and tcpip.sys were also referenced in the crash so if problem still exists after updating the atikmdag.sys uninstall ZoneAlarm or install the following hotfix. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981180/en-us There is a link at the top of the article to request the hotfix.

I've updated the driver of my display adapter, and I'll see if anything happens for the next few days. I'll use the hotfix then. Thank you for your help.

Oh, sorry to bother you again. I just had another BSOD, so I'm applying the hotfix because I don't want to remove ZoneAlarm. Or do I need to remove it to get rid of the problem completely? Is it the thing that causes this trouble?

The hotfix may resolve the problem but if it does not, then uninstall ZoneAlarm. There seems to be high stack usage or clash involving Windows drivers and third party filter drivers, such as with ZoneAlarm's vsdatant.sys. There is a bit of a discussion in the following link, as similar issues have been reported with Norton: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/NETIO-SYS-amp-SYMTDIV-SYS-BSOD-on-Win7-RTM-with-NAV-2010/m-p/147951 The hotfix was released apparently to resolve that clash but if it does not, then you should uninstall ZoneAlarm. This issue is more frequent in 64-bit installations but appears to also be the case in some 32-bit installations.

Yep, I was trying to keep ZoneAlarm, because I was really happy with its performance, but I've had another BSOD after the hotfix, so I'll uninstall it. Let's see if that works, and thanks again for your quick and thorough responses.

Good luck again. If you continue to receive BSODs can you make available the minidump file(s).
