Windows 7 Automatic Update
I can no longer find Windows Update on my PC. More specifically, When I open Administrative Tools and then Services I am shown a list of all the services available on my PC. Windows Update is not one cf them. It's just gone but Windows doesn't know that. Windows thinks I justneed to restart my computer. When I do restartI get the same error in Action Center about changing my AutoUpdate settings. When I try I get a no can do. Change manually? I say yes, nothing happens and the routine goes on ad infinitum. I fear a virus but the Malicious Software Removal Too can't find it nor can my AVG. Is there a way to download the service to reinstall it? Could I get it off of the CD?

Do you have any sytem restore points? If so consider running a system restore. Not 100%reliable but nine times out of ten it will fix a service.

Yes, I have 3 systom restore points, all unfortunately too recent to be of use. I tried them anyway though. No help. I also downloaded the windows update Service Agent from the site provided and it installed perfectly but didn't help. Maybe I'm thinking it wasn't permitted to help. I used the Windows Easy Transfer prograrm on this clean install and maybe it brought over a virus from my old PC.I'm searching through services and I have a Major Problem with one of them called DCOM Service Launcher. It's completely greyed out in servicesand when I trace it's file path (C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k DcomLaunch) it is an older executible and will not respond to anything. Not even Run as Administrator. NowI check back in services and this DCOM service Properties list it's dependencies as almost every other service on themachine. That is in properties under "the following Systems components depend on this service" The list starts with Remote Procedure Call(RPC) and lists every other service all the way down to WWAN AutoConfig. Meanwhile in the box above DCOM shows it is not dependant on anything. In fact even the NO Dependencies entry is greyed out. Anyway I can't get this out of there and I'm unclear on how to edit the registry.Which I am perfectly willing to do but need some help. Mr. Seven, I got the folder options/file extensions but you lost me at the Reistry Editor could you explain more? Flavius Zenothe other site speedyshare seems to be onlyselling something unrelated but if I you can list the correct site I would like to check it out. Thanks everyone, honestly thank you.

I can sure I gave you correct link. The file name is WU.zip -assigned red frame.Image http://img39.imageshack.us/i/19643742.png/ You have download ,unpack reg file import to registry (double click on it) +restart.Besides Mr Seven copied my fix include in his own last post.Alternatively you can open notepad (not regedit),copy & paste the code between dashes to notepad,File>>Save As,by option "Save as type" choose all file and file name for example WU.reg (extension is very important and must be *.reg ) image: http://img195.imageshack.us/i/ss2vr.png/ Next double click on this fix +restart Adressed to your ask about DCOM Launch an other- the options are grayed out - it is normal, not all services you can configure through services.msc - I don't think you have there any issues and don't touch them - even I mistake and you have and fix for Windows Update don't help make Repair Install http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html
