Windows 7 7600 x64 Ultimate Lag Spike Issue
Hi, I just bought this custom built computer recently. I've been using Windows 7 for some time now. Ever since the beginning 've been having an issue Every 5-10 seconds I get a huge lag spike SPECS: Windows 7 7600 Ultimate x64 ASUS M3A78-EM AMD 780G Socket AM2+ Motherboard AMD Phenom X4 9600 4MB 95W Socket AM2 CPU WD Caviar Green 1TB 8MB/SATA-3G 4GB Ram I went through many trouble shooting steps (editing registry/uninstall anti-virus/pinging different servers, using/update different drivers, etc) However, none can resolve my issue. At first I thought it might be my hardware issue (ethernet/wireless) I've tried being on ethernet AND wireless I also tried connecting directly to the modem Both has the same probelm I tried pinging www.google.com Ping are usually around 30-50ms but every 4-5 pings it jumps up to 200-300ms then it goes back down I used Netlimiter to try to find out what might be pulling my bandwidth. It doesn't seem like a bandwidth issue.. as no programs are downloading and uploading shown in Netlimiter However, i can see the chart occasionally jumping up high for a split second (It seems like the Upload chart has spike) It seems like it has something to do with uploading to Outgoing connection to remote host. However I dont understand, if i am not running any programs, why would i be uploading to remote host? I can guarantee this is because of Windows 7 (Since I have another computer Windows XP at home which has no issue at all) On my other computer which is Windows XP, it connects no problem with no lag spike at all. Now, I know this is not a common problem, I am just trying to see if somebody has an alternative solution or theory for this. If anyone can help I'll be muchly appreciated. Thank you

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Please run Resource Monitor, switch to the Network tab and check if there is any specific behavior. If so, please also check the related process. 2. Boot the system to Safe mode with networking and check if the issue persists. 3. Check if the issue also occurs on other computers on the same network. If it is possible, please also take this computer to another network to see how it works. If the issue persists, please also capture a netmon trace for further research: 1. Download the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3. 2. Install the network monitor on the Windows 7 computer and start to capture. 3. Ping a website and when the issue occurs, stop capturing and save the netmon trace files to check the related network activations. You can use Windows Live SkyDrive to upload the file and share its URL with us. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hi Calib, the same used to happen to me id suggest u to do the following:run cmd.exe as administrator and type:netsh interface tcp set global netdma=enablednetsh interface tcp set global dca=enabledone at a time!!but if u want to i can get u some extra which looks like this : netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled netsh interface tcp set global chimney=enabled netsh interface tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled netsh winsock set autotuning offnetsh interface tcp set global ecncapability=enabledagain one at a time!hope this helps,RR

Even if i turned off MMCSS i still got those random lagspikes!

by changing the RWIN value and MSS values in the registry it lows ur latency and automatically improves ur gaming responses so if u want i can look into my pendrive bkups and post here the optimal values..it worked for me too coz i was having problems with latency...

Hi Solid ill be posting mostly by tomrow the settings here and OFC they r based on a PPPOE connection which is the one used for most users!Kind regards,RR

ok, thank you! EDIT: I Downloaded the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 and recorded, the heavy lag occurs at somewhere near the end of the recording! I dont understand that much from it but maybe some peeps here can see what causing it? http://cid-9593611c6f70a79f.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Offentlig/heavy%20lag.cap EDIT2: Dont know if u understand what kind of problem i have, it started when i got Win7, and u can read the most positive match for my problem here: http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/31980-lag-online-games-windows-7-a.html#post331641 But as i stated before, it didn't worked to turn off MMCSS nor throttling :( But im not an expert so maybe its something else, this is a tricky one. !Microsoft please look into this!

Hi Solid thanks for waiting,so here are some TCP settings..but u can also tweak the AFD ...but that ill leave up to ur choice ..maybe ur not intrested in that...anyways heres what u can change in order to make it faster responsive:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters]"MaxMSS"=dword:000005b4"MSS"=dword:000005ac"RouterMTU"=dword:000005d4"MTU"=dword:000005d4"MaxMTU"=dword:000005dc"RWIN"=dword:00008820[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{HERE LOOK FOR UR INTERFACE GUID}]"MaxMSS"=dword:000005b4"MSS"=dword:000005ac"RouterMTU"=dword:000005d4"MTU"=dword:000005d4"MaxMTU"=dword:000005dc"RWIN"=dword:00008820i know u can do a lot more than that but i might restrict myself only to these settings so it wont look confusing...im sure u know how to add those registry entries but if u dont just in case:type in the search box : Regeditopen it then navigate through the paths provided above then add the DWORD values for those settings and notice all those values are in hexadeximal so make sure ur settings look like the above ^^Kind regards,RRPS: any further questions regarding other speed tweaks just lemme know !

Ok heres some extra settings:i just found out NetDMA cant work togueter with Chimney task offload and also found out the real deal with RSS which means multiple CPUs working for receiving packets...nways just a piece of info ..considering the above here it goes:Run CMD as administrator then type the following:netsh interface tcp set global rss=enabled chimney=enabled netdma=disabled autotuninglevel=disabled congestionprovider=ctcp ecncapability=enabled timestamps=enabledu can type one at a time example :netsh interface tcp set global rss=enabled netsh interface tcp set global chimney=enabled netsh interface tcp set global netdma=disabled netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled netsh interface tcp set global congestionprovider=ctcp netsh interface tcp set global ecncapability=enabled netsh interface tcp set global timestamps=enabledso hope this helps...all the best,RR PS: almost forgot so had to edit the post.. u can also try this one : netsh interface tcp set global dca=enabled DCADCA means(direct cache access) this lil dude is cool coz lets say u just visited an youtube video and went to another web site or lets say u visited 2 sites after the utube video then when u look for the video again in utube all from the beggining it automatically loads the video without buffering coz its already cached so u dont need to buffer the whole video again...the same for the last sites visited so guess it helps for games considering u in the same server and use the same information over and over..not sure if the text is clear but if its not lemme know then i reprahse it!

hmm, didnt help for that random heavy lag that occurs how random it can be lol, so i thinkin of restore from those registry settings and netsh :P how do i do that? just deleting the dwords?
January 14th, 2010 10:22pm

wow if those didnt help then i dunno what else we can do about it...just to check ..have u tried to browse in ur internet explorer for web sites to make sure if it has improved at any point? If improved i ask u why would u revert it back to the defaults? just give it a try...and btw u have to reboot after those changes !also try to run the following command(requires restart):netsh winsock set autotuning offbut if u want to revert back to where it was just type disabled where u put enabled and vice versa except for the autotuning and congestionprovider options...the congestionprovider should be set to "Standard" without the quotations...the registry keys u just have to delete them ! but i may advise to not restore it coz i dunno how it was so it could get any worse ..but u can try it then if ur internet gets any worse u just retype the suggestions above!Kind regards,RRPS: the problem could be related to ur ISP which i strongly belive so...or the game servers!

hi again,S0lid i doubt it u tried the DCA technique?!?ok just in case have a look at this :http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2574this page explains some of importnt principles for the new TCPIP stack from windows vista up to 7!hope this will help u out a bit!Kind regards,RR

well, the fact is that it started when i got win7, both higher ping in css on a 100/100 server, on xp i hade very low, below 10, but i never have that low with win7, but it doesn't bother me to much, however, the random occurring lag is the frustrating thing. i do play music all the time when i am at the PC including when i play games so its a weird network throttling mechanism of some kind, belived it was MMCSS (Multimedia Class Scheduler Service). If u search for MMCSS ping problem or so u will find that the ping is normal most of the time but suddenly it jumps up high and u cant move, or do anything at that time, its like the sending packages is throttled but not the receiving? i just dont know anymore.. hope u understood some of the text. oh, and the thing that lowered my mmo ping btw (world of warcraft) was the TcpAckFrequency thing and TCPNoDelay, but it didnt worked with all programs so i changed it back. http://yfrog.com/2pheavylagj
