I'm attempting to install a USB headset. The device is provided by logitech and uses the generic usb audio device drivers provided by Microsoft and included with Windows 7. To be crystal clear here there is zero software provided by the manufacturer for this device. Do not tell me to go to the manufacturer, Microsoft has provided this driver within Windows for several editions. I've tested the device on several Windows 7 machines and it is detected, installs and works properly on those which have the generic usb audio device driver pre-installed and does not work on those where it is not present. To elaborate on why I believe this is related to a lack of preinstalled Generic USB audio device drivers: For those installs where the device does work. Prior to inserting the USB headset, when I open device manager, select to update driver for any driver, I can select to browse my computer for software, 'let me pick from a list of device drivers' on my computer, Sound, Video and game controllers, the first selection listed is (Generic USB Audio) - USB Audio Device. For those installs where the device does not work the default Microsoft Windows 'Generic USB audio' device is not listed as a manufacturer and Model 'USB Audio Device' does not appear in the device driver list. Those installations of Windows 7 where problem this occurs are brand new, sealed DVD's provided to US military personnel through the Microsoft purchase program. I've confirmed this is not a corrupted installation, bad hard drive, etc. by using brand new hardware, brand new dvd, complete reinstall on clean hardware. Windows does not install the (Generic USB Audio) device and there is no means through Windows update to force it to do so. This seems to be agnostic of the hardware or chipset inside the machines as I've used this install DVD on an HP Laptop that came with an OEM win 7 install which did have the generic usb audio drivers and after using the military purchase win 7 DVD lacking the audio drivers it also sets up without them. I would appreciate any thoughts or direction on this issue.
