Windows 7 64 crashing when scrolling PDFs or watching movies with iTunes
I have the following problem: I'm using a Sony Vaio VGN-FZ31S and since I updated to Windows 7 64 (clean install) I experience the following issues: - when I scroll PDF files the system sometimes hangs completely - when I watch movies with Itunes (but not with windows media player) the system also hangs after a while sometimes I have done a complete memory check and I consulted other forums (sent in minidumps etc) but nobody was able to tell me what the problem is. Could there be a compatibility issue with my video driver? Any advice is appreciated.

Can you scroll PDF files in Safe Mode without issue?

I will have to test that. The problem is, it can sometimes take a long time for the error to occur. If it would work in safe mode, would that mean that there is a problem with the driver?
February 15th, 2010 9:07am

If it works in Safe mode then the problem would more likely be with a driver rather than the actual hardware.

It looks like this is the case. So what can I do? Am I right in thinking that a 2-year old Sony vaio is just not compatible with Windows 7 64? Looks like a switch to Apple is the only right step here...

You tried it in Safe Mode and it worked OK?

I have tried safe mode and I was unable to replicate the error. But this is hardly surprising as the safe mode is really using only the skeleton of Windows 7. I'm quite certain that there must be an issue with the video driver. How can I pinpoint the issue? Nobody appears to be able to read and interpret dumpfiles - I wonder what they're good for!

This is what the minidump says: But it is very unlikely that the hardware error started to occur since I installed Windows 7.... I can't believe that there is a hardware error. Your problem is you're overclocking the CPU which causes it to be unstable, reset the CPU to factory default settings and run it again. THe bugcheck is referring to a CPU problem.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. I believe it would highly benefit to try to update the display driver as the driver now installed pre-dates Windows 7.As Sony does not appear to have specific Windows 7 drivers for your laptop and NVIDIA restricts Sony Vaio users from installing their reference drivers consider using drivers with a modified .inf file to install. You could try here for drivers with a modified inf:http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/driversRead the "Quickstart Guide" first.

Ok, unfortunately I had another crash with the new driver. The crash looked a bit differently now (I got a blue screen instead of just the system hanging and the fonts were all over the place). The first crash with the new driver shows a direct involvement of the nvlddmkm.sys which is the display adapter driver (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver). The nvlddmkm.sys (nvlddmkm) shows up in the STACK_TEXT field along with other drivers such as the dxgkrn.sys (dxgkrn) which is the DirectX Graphics Kernel. That does tend to indicate that the problem is with the display adapter driver or the display adapter itself. When did these crashes occur? Was it when scrolling PDFs or watching movies with iTunes? Also, it may help to provide some more info on the computer:Start > type msinfo32 in the "Search programs and files" box and press "Enter" > File > Save > then save as an .nfo fileThen make the resulting .nfo file available as you did for the minidump file in your second post. Also, in the Device Manager can you expand "Display Adapters" then double-click the display adapter > Details, then select "Hardware Ids"What information is given?

The error occured when watching a movie with iTunes (after about 20min). I had to go back to the old driver as the new one caused crashed at random, even without watching movies. Hardware lds of the display adaptor are as follows: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0425&SUBSYS_9005104D&REV_A1 PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0425&SUBSYS_9005104D PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0425&CC_030000 PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0425&CC_0300 Computer specs: http://www.dickreuter.com/computer.nfo thanks

The computer is now crashing much more frequently and it appears that the error persists even after the crash. Sometimes after start-up I need to cold-start the coputer (have it switched off for more than 10sec) to avoid a screen a start-up that looks faulty (wrong colors and strange lines in the middle of the screen). This is since I updated the driver and going back to the old one didn't reverse the problem.

...and another crash dump. I'm almost certain, that it's the drivers which are faulty. A hardware error is very unlikely as the problem started to occur exactly once I installed Windows 7 (clean install). I have seen a lot of problems with Sony machines, enough that I would not buy one. I suggest trying the Vista drivers and see if you can graunch the situation.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! IT/Developer, Windows/Linux/Mainframe RaidMax Smilodon, 680W, Asus M2NBP-VM CSM AMD X2 4200+, 2GB DDR2-800, HD2400 Pro, more details on my site, need a new boot disk, existing one is 5 years old

Can you make available the following minidump file which corresponds to the VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116) error?:C:\Windows\Minidump\021710-28236-01.dmpAlso, I was unable to open the .nfo file you provided with System Information but could read portions of it with Wordpad. Can you double-check here?:Start > type msinfo32 in the "Search programs and files" box and press "Enter" > expand Components > Problem DevicesIs there anything listed in the window to the right of Problem Devices? Also, based on the Hardware Ids there appears to be drivers available for Windows 7 for the display adapter via Windows Update. You could try these drivers and see if they make any difference.First uninstall the drivers now installed using "Uninstall a program".After restarting the computer open Windows Update and select "Check for Update".The drivers should then appear for installation. As suggested by Vegan Fanatic using Vista drivers posted for the laptop at the Sony site is also a possibility.

I have now reinstalled windows 7 and put on the 32 bit version. Now everything is stable. The 64 bit drivers of nVidia are clearly faulty. They are useless. Thanks for your help anyway!
