Windows 7 64 bit HP Universal PCL 6 Drivers Windows Server 2003 Print Server HP LaserJet 2430 Printers Can't connect to printer
Brief Synopsis: Bought a batch of new Lenovo T500 laptops. Installed Windows 7 64bit Enterprise Edition and now trying to get the login script to properly install printers. Downloaded HP Universal PCL 6 Drivers 32bit and 64bit. Both drivers installed on our File/Printer Cluster Server which is a Windows Server 2003 Changed the printer drivers for our HP LaserJet 4015 printers on the File/Printer Cluster to the Universal Drivers. After manually adding one 4015 to the Windows 7 laptop (credentials etc.) the other 4015's were able to install after loginscript was run. Tried changing the printer drivers for the HP LaserJet 2430's to the Universal Printer driver. XP Machines print fine. Windows 7 gets a "Cannot connect to printer" error when I try to add printer manually. The loginscript is not working to bring down these printers. When I connect to the printer directly using it's IP Address and point it to the Universal Printer Driver to install it installs fine. When a create a local port and use UNC to point to the printer it installs correctly... but it doesn't seem to want to be able to install from the Add Printer Wizard pointing to the networked printer server NOR via loginscript. Anyone else have a similar problem? I haven't yet tried changing the other HP Printers to the new Universal driver. I had of course expected them all to just work since it was the same driver for all the printers...

Hi, I suspect this issue should be related to the script, if you would like to check or modify your logon script, please go to Scripting Forum for help. To add the printer, I think you can also try GP Preferences. For more information, please refer to: GP Preferences: Add a new printer, set as default Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Thing is we are installing all other printers via exactly the same scripting command "WSHNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection" Not only that but when you try to use the add printer wizard in Windows 7 it says it has problems connecting to the printer. The only work around I've found is to create a local port with a UNC path to our printerserver/printer. Still not sure why the HP LaserJet 2430's aren't working. As for using Group Policy to install printers. That would work if each person only needed printers in their own OU... but because our script is actually based on what groups this person is a member of I'm not sure how that would work. The Universal Printer driver is working for our 2300's,3505's, 4700's, 4015's, and 4050's... just not this very specific model 2430...

I realize that this post is a few months old but I am having the same problem. Did you ever come up with a fix to "Cannot connect to printer" error, other than loading the Universal Print Driver locally?

Exact same problem here... Windows Server 2003 shares the printers. 64 bit drivers were added with no problem. Win7 64bit client tries to connect. Says: "cannot connect to printer, 0x00000007". Only way is to install printers on clients directly using a TCP port, which undoes all the benefits of having a print server.
