Windows 7 64-bit ownership & permissions problems
Hi all, I have been searching for related fixes to this problem for weeks, with no success so far. I have seen plenty of posts about ownership and permissions problems in Windows 7, but none quite like this. If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it. I have 20 HP z200 workstations in our school's graphic arts lab. They shipped with Windows 7 64-bit on 2 internal drives in a hardware RAID 1 setup. I setup the first PC, installed all applications (mainly CS5), ran Sysprep, and then cloned this image to the other 19 computers using a WinPE disc and ImageX. These are in a Windows 2003 AD domain, and I used Group Policy to create local accounts using the Local Users and Groups preferences (yes, I know this is a little odd, but we didn't want to use domain accounts in this class for various reasons...). We immediately had major permission and ownership problems, like so: local user creates a file in CS5, saves it, then does not have permissions to change it, and cannot take ownership of it either (access denied). I login as local Administrator, and cannot take ownership of the file either. The only way to fix the problem is to boot into Safe Mode and take ownership from there. This seemed to be happening vary randomly. Eventually I turned UAC off (which I didn't want to have to do), and that solved 99% of these problems. But we still occasionally have the same issue, where users are either not owners of their own files, or they are owners, but still have no permissions to change the file. Once in a while, simply rebooting the PC will fix the problem. So, to sum up: users' own files are not accessible to them, and even an admin cannot take ownership of these files, except in Safe Mode. Sometimes rebooting the computer fixes the problem, though. The only other thing worth mentioning is that we run Savant Protection on these PCs, as our security software, but turning Savant off doesn't seem to affect the problem. I'm stumped. Any suggestions? Turning Savant Protection off needn't have any effect that you expect. I would recommend to try without it. (Compare services in normal and safe modes.) Regards Milos

Alright. I can try uninstalling Savant, and see what happens. Thanks.

I've completely removed our security software (Savant) from the lab, but we are still having the same permissions problems. Any advice, anyone? Bret
