Windows 7 / LAN Internet connection hangs at startup for some programs
I'm having an odd issue with my new computer -- it seems about only half of my startup programs can use the internet for the first few minutes after windows starts. For example, Steam and Dropbox are immediately able to connect, but Chrome and Thunderbird cannot seem to connect for a few minutes. I have attempted to troubleshoot this as best I can. I followed the advice found in the following thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/0d32eeef-a3bb-4bbf-96fb-2c721b0acf20/ The only error in event viewer that I'm seeing is Event ID 1001--IPAdressNotAssigned. This is logged about 2 minutes after windows starts, and so I think this is referring to my problem, but I'm not sure. I updated my bios on my ASUS board, but that didn't help, and I have the newest drivers for my Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connection that is on the board. I remember reading somewhere that some startup program might be putting a hold on (excuse the following imprecision) DNS-lookup-or-something for a set period of time, which might be causing programs starting up after it to not see the internet for a set amount of time. So, any ideas concerning this situation -- I would appreciate it.

Those look like excellent suggestions. I have made the changes referred to in the first two suggestions -- I'll post again regarding whether they worked or not. Hi, According to your description, I suggest to perform these tests to troubleshoot the issue: 1 Try to enable the local policy: Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon Enable “Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon” 2 Disable IPv6: a. Right click on the Network icon in the System Tray and click on Network and Sharing center. b. Click on Change Adapter settings. c. Right click on Network Adapter and Choose ‘Properties’. d. Uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6”. e. Click on OK. 3 Did your connect with a router? If yes, bypass it, or update the firmware of the router. 4 Temporally disable firewall and antivirus program. 5 Create another admin account and login to see if the same issue occurs.
