Windows 7 - Slow Internet
I recently installed Windows 7 on my Lenovo T400 Laptop. Ever since, the internet has been painfully slow. I installed Windows 7 cleanly on my machine that had been preinstalled with Windows Vista. Under Vista, I had absolutely no wireless issues. Win7 says that my wireless signal is 'Excellent' and shows full bars with Internet connectivity. Browsing the web though is extremently slow. I have 2 other laptops on my home network - a Lenovo ThinkPad T500 running (*gasp* ) WinXP and a Mac Book Pro. Both have blazing fast broadband while my T400 with Win7 can barely load a page. I've scoured the web, including this forum, and tried all kinds of suggested things like changing the power management settings, rebooting my router, flushing the dns etc etc to no avail. I've observed that pinging my router results in 25%-75% dropped packets. Again, two other laptops on my network have no issues with connecting to the router and have really fast internet speeds so something tells me that the router is not the problem. Any suggestions? - - - System Specs: Lenovo ThinkPad T400 2764-CTO Intel Core 2 duo P8600 2.40 GHz 3 MB RAM Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit Modem/Router: BT Home Hub 2.0 Wifi Adapter: ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III

This can be a driver issue. Please download the latest driver from the following website and install it. Hi Arthur, Thanks a lot for replying. Unfortunately, the drivers you've pointed me to are not the correct drivers for my Wireless card. My wireless card is a "ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III". The ones you've pointed me to are for a card with a similar name, "ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter II" but it's not the same card. I've tried these drivers anyway but they're not correct and don't help. At the moment, I have the "ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III" drivers for Vista installed as I can't seem to find Windows 7 drivers anywhere. Also, I've temporarily disabled my Anti Virus (AVG Free) and reinstalled the drivers but the problem still persists. Any additional help would be really appreciated, this is driving me nuts.

Hi ralfymann, thanks but unfortunately, those are the drivers I have installed. They're Vista drivers as they're the best I can seem to find but aren't working out for me. I'm starting think my only option is to replace my Wifi Adapter.

Hi Arthur, Thanks but the download page you've directed me to is for R 400 and R 500 laptops rather than T 400's. Either way, I've been to the Lenovo support site for T400 drivers and have not been able to find Win7 drivers so I'm currently using the Vista drivers. I've also tried the drivers that Windows Update thinks are appropriate for my card but I have the same issue with them. I've also eliminated AVG as the cause of the problem by both disabling it and uninstalling it. In both cases, the problem still persists.

Hi, Sorry for the incorrect link. The download link for T500 is: Lenovo Support & downloads - Drivers and software - ThinkPad T500, W500 I noticed that the wireless drivers in the download page are the same as the page for T400. So the driver should not be the problem. Does the issue only occurs within IE? How does the connection works with other network applications such as Windows Live Messenger? You may consider to troubleshoot in Clean Boot Mode. Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program If the issue still occurs, please reset IE settings: How to reset Internet Explorer settings If the issue remains, launch IE in No Add-ons Mode. To do so, click the Start Button, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). If the issue does not reoccur, it may be caused by an IE Add-on. In that case, let’s continue to perform the following steps to narrow down the cause. Check Internet Explorer Add-Ons ========================= 1. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options. 2. Click the "Programs" tab, and then click Manage Add-ons. 3. Select an add-on in the Name list, and then click Disable. 4. Restart IE with Add-ons and check the issue again. If the issue is resolved, the disabled Add-on was the cause of the issue. If the issue reoccurs, continue to disable the next Add-on using the same method. By doing so, we could determine which Add-on contributed to the issue. This issue occurs with all browsers and applications that require access to the Internet, not just IE. I've done a clean start up into Safe Mode with Networking and still have the same issue.

Problem now solved. I've replaced my Atheros based 'ThinkPad 11b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Express Adapter III' Intel 5300 Wifi card and am back to being wire free. Thanks for all the help but it turned out, as somewhat expected, to be a hardware/Win7 compatibility issue.
