.. so unlike other posts on this SP1 error code, the manifest looks OK but there's some sort of simpler CSI error. also, i ran sfc /scannow, returns that system integrity is OK.
any help gratefully received.

same problem here (also 64bit os) (I tried on a restore from the last system image I've made: same problem) Found a solution: Steps followed: 1. Try Microsoft Fix it (http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/en-us) Choose windows,install/upgrade software, windows
update : gives windows fix it http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_security_diagnostic/ For me this did not give a solution : no problems detected, suggestion was to open a case with microsoft. 2. Before openening a case: I tried to install the latest
version of the Windows Update Agent from here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104 Installed it and this solved the problem : I now have sp1 installed (installation takes a very long time) Hope this helps you too

If the solution from ugge doesn't work, run an InPlace Upgrade [1][2] to repair your windows. Your programs are still usable after doing the InPlace upgrade. This should repair all missing/damaged files and servicing issues.
Now install the Sp1.

.. none of these worked for me - including an in-place upgrade - so i had to do a complete nuke :( i.e. a total clean install.

I have been trying to install Windows 7 SP1 multiple times.
I have tested "System
Update Readiness Tool", clean boot, Shutting down services and sfc.exe /scannow doesn't fix the problem.
Checkdisk doesn't fix the problem.
Rename the
Software Distribution folder
tested The
Windows Update troubleshooter
After these operation i have no clue what to try.
