Windows 7 - Failed to Play Test Tone
Problem description: All sound on my Windows 7 system has stopped working. Attempting to play a sound in Sound control panel shows the error "Failed to play test tone." My speakers are connected through a SoundMax Integrated Sound Card through the Optical output. However, under the SPDIF Interface properties, I am able to play and hear the test tones for DTS Audio and Dolby Digital, but no other sound will play on the computer. This happened after my computer froze when playing Fallout 3: New Vegas and I had to force shutdown the computer. Attempted fixes: I've tried uninstalling drivers and reinstalling (both new drivers and the older ones I was previously using). I've tried various quick fixes on the net that did not work, but I haven't messed with the registry. I've tried disabling the sound drivers via the Bios starting windows, noting that it doesn't see a sound device anymore, and then re-enabling the sound drivers. I've tried using windows default drivers and using a non-optical cord to the speakers. I've of course made sure that the SPIDF device in Sound is the default sound device. I would have liked to do a system restore but there were no restore points before the crash (though there are a lot now with all the changes I've made) Recent changes: No recent changes, just played Fallout 3: New Vegas and it forced me to turn off the PC by holding down the power button. -- Operating system: Windows 7 64 bit System specs: Machine manufacturer/model number. If home-built, name your processor, motherboard, graphics card, memory, power supply, hard drive(s), etc. If any other hardware or equipment is relevant to your problem, list it here. Processor: Core I7 Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Graphics Card: 2x NVidia Geforce GTX 275 (SLIed) I have Googled and searched these forums to attempt to get an answer: Yes I would like to avoid reinstalling Windows 7 if I can, so I figured I'd ask here before I resorted to that.

I tried a few more things to get this to work last night and today, but I still haven't had any luck. Anyone have any thoughts on what I can do to get my sound working again?

Hi, Based on my experience, you may try the following steps to check if it can work: 1. Go to control panel. 2. Click Sound icon. 3. Right click the Speakers, and choose properties. 4. Go to the Enhancements Tab and Click on it. 5. Click “Disable all enhancements”. Hope it helps.
