Windows 7 - An improvement? ? ? ?
I had heard that Windows 7 was developed with XP as a base. I was really looking forward to geting a newer OS that was easily managed. It wasn't! I paid the price and downloaded the RC version and have spent over 40 hours attempting to connect to a simple, home, XP network. Seven has the same inherent roadblocks as Vista. Online and F1 help is catch-as-catch-can. No definite fixes for problems, just 'Try this, it worked for me.'. Oh well, another week shot to you know where. Microsoft is going to have to extend support for XP until they have the sense to develop an OS that is easily manageable for the average user. I have been using PC's as long as there have been PC's and M$ has done nothing to top XP. Why can't they see that. I saw a statistic that 73% of all Vista computers have been downgraded to XP. I've even done about a dozen for my customers. WAKE UP MICROSOFT! This will probably never see daylight on the forums because, like the Obama blitz, M$ doesn't like the bad press. I've had my say anyway, and will now go back to XP and try to keep my customers productive. central_texan

It's a *gasp* known fact that Vista wasderived from XP and Windows 7was derived fromVista. And 73% of all computers insome unspecifiedparticular group of computers actually were downgraded to XP.And did you know that Microsoft actually released a FREE vesion of Windows 7?!?Many people reading this thread right now are actually interested in buying timeshares built near bridges for sale over swamp land in Florida.-Noel

And let's not forget the influence of Vax VMS on NT. And so on.I think it's safe to say Windows7 comes fromEniac, and of coursewas influencedby the computer on the Enterprise. I know it occasionally convinces itself it's illogical and shorts out. :)-Noel

Ok, let's (try to) set the record straight...Windows 7 was NOT based on XP!! It is based on Vista which was NOT based on XP. Vista was a clean slate build, from the ground up which, explains why you can't go from XP to Windows 7 as an upgrade path. Also explains why there will be difficulties doing things between XP & Windows 7.Have no idea where you got 73%. Some users stayed w/ XP due to a lot of misguided bad hype Vista received in the beginning... I say misguided cus it was mostly based on compatibility issues due to 3rd party vendors & manufacturers not ready for it & ppl wrongly put the blame on Vista. Some Enterprise customers needed XP for some apps so some new machines were downgraded for that reason... it is also why XP Mode is in Windows 7.As for MS "waking up"... Not only according to OS life-cycles was a new OS due but, MS approached Windows 7 in an effort & w/ an aim & goal to addressing the complaints that existed towards Vista. Consequently it is superior to & more appealing than Vista & both are better than XP, certainly under the covers & in many ways.I used XP for years, beta tested Vista & Windows 7. Have worked w/ many clients through XP & Vista. I am, now, very excited to guide them into Windows 7. The improvements (over Vista)in Windows 7 are beyond dispute.Yes, support for XP will last til 2014 but, is it staying mired in the past? no question it is. I liked XP but, Windows 7 is extremely advanced compared to XP.Bashing MS I know is a really cool thing to do but, so is appreciating the value of Windows 7 & the good sense & valueto technological progress.
