Windows 7 (RC) cannot access Network drive box.
Hi, my predicament is a little strange. the problem is that i cannot access, or even see for that matter, the D-link DNS 323 network-attached storage device that i set up a while ago. Normally i would begin by looking for general Win7 work-around/solutions. However, the strange thing is there is another Win 7 computer in the house (Toshiba Sattelite) that can access the device adn all its volumes perfectly. i'm not entirely sure what is wrong with my system. I've recently updated my network controller mini-port with vista 32bit driver is hopes of remedying the problem without any success. I'm completely lost at what to even look at by this point. some details that may help: mainboard: A8N SLI Premium Processor: Dual Core Opteron Network Controller: Marvell Yukon Gigabit ethernet (not using gigabit) additional issues: Cannot access printer on an XP terminal Cannot access shared folder/default public folder on any XP system on the network.

Was it like that since installing Win7 on that pc? If so you messed up the setup of the network during install and have net discovery and file/print sharing turned off. Either way the answer may likely be to play with the network and sharing center.

I suggest that you check if "Network discovery" and "File printer sharing" are turned on. 1. Click Start->Control Panel. Double-click Network and Sharing Center. 2. In the left pane, click "Change advanced sharing settings".3. Make sure that "Network discovery" and "File printer sharing" are turned on. If the issue persists, please temporary disable firewall and anti-virus. If it does not help, change the authentication level to make it the same as in Windows XP. to North 7: Actually, now that you note it, the system was detecting and fuctioning well with the NAS for a short period before. I have taken most of the common step to attempt a resolve (i.e. Network and sharing options, credentials, Firewalls,) however i'm not exactly sure how to disable the anti virus in Win7 (havn't completely adjusted to new interface settings). To Arthur Xie: However, I may not have tried the authentication level settings. how would i go about changing these? Update- the owner of the other Win7 computer on the network ( th eone with no issues) theorises that the problem is a result of windows live update (no specific idea though) based on the fact that mine has been frequently updated , while his has never been updated since installation. Any simmilar issues that fit these details?

Please refer the article I provided in my previous post. You can configure this security setting by opening the appropriate policy and expanding the console tree as such: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\I suggest that you change it to the default value in Windows XP: Send LM & NTLM responses. Generally, the network drive issue is caused by incompatibility. The authentication method of the drive matches the level in Windows XP, but not in Windows Vista and Windows 7 RC. Since you have not installed any updates, Windows Live updates should not be the cause.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Flark,Since another machine has access to the device you should log-in to the NAS through the Web UI and check the network settings from there to assist in configuring the connection.Have you logged into the router to identify the ip address assigned to the NAS?You could also download the Easy Search Utility from D-Link here to assist in configuring the device.Did the Toshiba user create a Homegroup? The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.

Nano Warp, I'm not really sure what you mean in identifying the ip address assigned to the NAS. could you elaborate? Also, i've tried the easy search utility and all the options require that a device is detected (which it ends up not being). to answer your question, the toshiba computer did set up a home group, but it doesnt access the shared volumes on the network drive (while the system itself works fine accessing and running videos/music etc. off the drive), and neither does joining the homegroup do much.

Since you have not installed any updates, Windows Live updates should not be the cause. Arthur Xie - MSFT Thats the thing. i've ruled out incompatibility since the other Win7 computer is able to access the drives normally, and i have installed updates on my system while the other system (the working one) has never been updated. Also the values have been set to "Send LM & NTLM responses"

Hi Flark, I have two DNS-323's and They were working fairly well with Windows 7 until today. Suddenly my system didn't see them anymore. I tried everything to get them to be recognized and finally I got one to work by reinstalling the driver. They both show up in my Network and Sharing page as Storage devices but when I try to click on either of them, only the one that I got working opens. It's acting like there is just one driver for both, which there probably is, even though they both have their own ip address. Unfortunately I did three things today that could account for this. I updated Windows (patch Tuesday), I updated iTunes and I updated Office Live add-in 1.4. I have had issues with Windows 7 losing them before but eventually it always found them but this time I'm stumped. I've re-booted many times, gone through all the Network troubleshooting, etc. One thing that is weird is that when I have clicked on the device in certain conditions that I can see it, it tells me that my system does not have authorization to access it. I guess I'll have to try uninstalling the things I installed today and see if that helps.

Can anyone think of where the problem might be from this?

Besides the cases where the drive does show up in the Network Places as a "computer" (and is inaccessable with the report that you may not have permission to access etc), when the system doesnt see them, at the bottom of the window under the group heading of "storage", is the NAS present under its given name?

I'l give it a whack and get back with the results. if it does work, perhaps the problem may be resolved permanently by reporting the faulty update to microsoft (fingers crossed :] )

Hi Flark, Yes to all that. I can even click on the device and get properties which tells me the correct ip address for each one. But when I try to enter the ip address when I try to Map it, it tells me that it can't access it.
July 16th, 2009 7:43pm

How do you uninstall each update? I tried System Restore but it won't work, tells me that I have Anti Virus software which is interfering with it. I am going to try removing my anti-virus and try it one more time. Edit: Forget I asked this question, my mind is on other things...LOL

Hi Nano Warp Yes, I can log into the device no problem, Windows is just not recognizing it even though it shows up in the Network Map.
July 16th, 2009 7:48pm

I have this exact problem as well after some updates yesterday. I have a Dlink DNS-323 on my network. It's share name is \\DNS\ (not a great name, granted, but it works). I've had it on my network for a year now. When I installed Windows 7 I had no problems accessing the device. Yesterday, after 4 updates, it is no longer accessible through my current methods. Links to programs on it (\\DNS\sharename) style links do not work, saying the standard "drive or network connection unavilable" message. Going to start->Run \\DNS\ results in this error: "\\DNS\ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions. *The account is not authorized to log in from this station.*" (*'s mine for emphasis). Here's where it gets weird: I can get to it by typing the IP address in the run dialog. I can map drives using the IP address. If I enter the IP and name into the lmhosts file it does NOT work. It still behaves exactly as described. I have done the following: Ensured network discovery is on. Set "Send LM & NTLM response if NTLM2 isn't agreed" or whatever. It should work that way. The device no longer appears as a computer on the network, only as a Network storage device, but if I double click it, it only takes me to the box's configuration web interface. The box DOES work fine with other Vista boxes still. I have no logins required for the device. I have used the tool from DLink, it behaves as normal. I have installed the Dlink upnp-x driver, all that did was change the icon to a picture that looked like my device. One detail: I *can* ping the device using the device name, not the IP. That works fine. I'm really, really stumped. I'm 99% sure an update yesterday caused this. Here are the list of updates I did: Security Update for Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 (KB969693)Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows 7 Release Candidate for x64-based Systems (KB973346)Windows Live EssentialsUpdate for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Junk Email Filter (KB971933)Office Live add-in 1.4 Any help would be appreciated. I've never before seen an issue like this. Update: Removing KB973346 did not help. It's either Live Essentials or an Office Update that caused this.

You can uninstall windows updates from: control panel -> uninstall a program -> view installed updates (on the left hand side.) Of course other programs are just before that.

Got it! Windows Live Essentials did it. Uninstalling the "Windows Live ID Login Assistant" fixed the issue. You can find it in your programs list in the control panel. Now of course the question is why, and how, and can it be fixed?

Thanks Aphex242, Uninstalled the Windows live login Assistant and the problem was resolved. all access has been restored to my drives and public document drops. I'm probably gonna get down to reporting this to MS (and hopefully the fixes for the public release will include the windows Live login issue) Thanks to everyone who participated in helping me (and others with the same) with this problem.I was going to revert back to XP pro (grudgingly and in the middle of very important projects) :D once again thanks and good luck with other system issues.

Now of course the question is why, and how, and can it be fixed? Aphex242 hit the nail on the head. My PC running Win 7 RCwas running happy as a clam (accessing my mapped drives) until one day I was no longerallowed acces to my mapped drives, I ws apparently no longer authorized to acces them. Hmmmph - go figure.I tried the Microsoft suggestions which are the same as those as given by Arthur Xie, but all my settings were still as they should be. I followed Aphex242's suggestion and removed the "Windows Live ID Login Assistant" and voila - instant acces again after a reboot. Thanks

Hi. I too had the above issue as mentioned by Aphex, where my laptop could access my dns-323 no problem, but when I tried to browse folders in my DNS via my desktop, the progress bar would scroll green, then I would get message: "(drive name) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions. *The account is not authorized to log in from this station"'. Funny thing is, we pinged the DNS and it sent and received fine. (Note, I am running Win 7 on both computers, and my DNS is firmware 1.09) So after hours with Dlink tech support trying everything under the sun and suggesting it was Windows or my desktop, finally found the fix. The trick is to restore the DNS to default. This is what the tech had me do, and it did the trick: 1. Shut down DNS (press and hold button until it begins flashing) 2. Remove all drives from the DNS 3. Restart the DNS by pressing power button. 4. Enter the config utility for the DNS opening browser and typing in the IP address for your DNS (default is 192.168.0.32, but you may have changed it....you can verify by using the DLINK easy search utility from Dlink website) (default login is user: Admin, with no password) 5. Go to Tools tab on the top, then on the left, click on System 6. Then click on RESTORE. computer screen should change and it should say something like DNS restarting, and show seconds counting down. 7. Once finished rebooting, you should come back to the login page for the DNS configuration utility. 8. Turn the DNS off and reinsert drives. 9. Turn the DNS on, and try to access your drives. Crazy thing is that the name that appeared in my windows explorer changed from Network drive to DLINK XXXXX , where the Xs are a numbers and letters. Oh well, it worked. I remapped my two drives and all good to go. Word of caution from tech....whenever resetting or restoring the dlink, they say take the drives out before doing so (as per above) just to make sure there is no corruption of your data/drives. Hope this saves someone else the time of troubleshooting this bizarre problem.
