Windows 7 (Enterprise) Log In hang after Hibernating through a time warp
Executive summary: Windows 7 (at least Enterprise) may "hang" after booting, but before displaying the login screen, when resuming from hibernation after changing the system time for "political correctness". Engineer's exposition - It's one of those "never happened before" and (seemingly) too weird a combination of clauses to be worth reproducing (for me, at least) - but here goes: I've got a (dreadfully old, for the OS) laptop with Windows 7 (Enterprise) installed - 2+ GHz P4 (non-HT) core, 1 GiB RAM, ancient integrated video. It was set up a few weeks ago to test Win7 on a bare metal P4 (and for the "mad scientist" giggles of seeing what the display would actually look like [it's surprisingly good - considering how "way below minimum" spec it is for "canonical" Win7 approval]). Another laptop "didn't get water dumped all over it" (that's the story, and they're sticking to it - how that clear fluid came dripping out of the lid when it was turned on it's side is a matter for investigators of religious miracles to explain, not mere users). So, in response to the "I need Internet Explorer on a laptop, right NOW!" wail (because there's some "meaningful content" on TV with a web address), the Win7 "box" got a wireless USB dongle, a new user account, and a "squat" space. It's been "abducted" for about a week now. All the accounts are set to "hibernate" by default on power down. Last night was the blissful end of another "Daylight Shenanigans Time". The Win7 "box" had been left "on" overnight. At some point well before doing the "time warp" again, the display shut down (dark screen, illuminated base) - standard operating procedure. At some later time the "base" shut down ("hibernated") - this, too, is standard operating procedure, but whether it occurred in truly standard fashion (i.e. before the clock decided to "call a do over" on the last hour), or after throwing a "clock reset" "warning", I've got no idea. Dawn came, and it was time to check the "left open" IE windows. Pushing the power button brought up the hardware splash screen, and I left to grab an irradiated elixir. When I returned there was a responsive pointer on a black screen, with no other activity. The usual array of click, tap, chord (when something seems hung) all yielded no response. So, I grit my teeth (mostly caused by the dread of pushing the "Big Red Switch" - but the crufty coffee helped the expression along) and power cycled it. Up came the hardware splash screen, followed by the "Resuming" (not "Starting") Windows splash screen, followed by the usual "steady" hard drive access (when resuming from hibernation), followed by the same responsive pointer on a black screen (and the hard drive shutting down, after a while). I grit my teeth and power cycled, again (this time it was just fear of the BRS - the first dose of coffee was long gone). Again - hardware splash screen, "Resuming" (not "Starting") Windows splash screen, the usual "steady" hard drive access (when resuming from hibernation), followed by the same responsive pointer on a black screen (and the hard drive shutting down, after a while). Another power cycle, and a miss timed F8, did the same "dance" again (each time with the "Resuming", as opposed to "Starting" message). Another power cycle, with a well timed F8, allowed me to "safe" start the system, which brought up the log in screen (without a hitch), where I simply opted to "restart". Not surprisingly, this time there was the hardware splash screen, followed by the "Starting" (not "Resuming") Windows splash screen, followed by the (normal) log in screen - and all was "right again in the world" (including clocks that pretend to have something to do with keeping time). If anybody seems to care, nobody points out that this is a known issue, and the "magical" alkaloid can keep me upright long enough, I'll see if hibernate before, versus during, versus after "time warp" makes any difference (I know - I claimed that it wasn't worth reproducing, but now that I'm [reasonably] awake, the power of curiosity compels me).

I was on the machine all the time during the roll-back (last week for me) and never really noticed it. Gotta admit, Im curious too.
