Windows 7 & Vista Network Password Erratic Behaviour
My files are in a share in my Windows Vista Ultimate PC. I used to access them from my Windows 7 laptop with no problems. Got users with same usernames and passwords on both machines and network access wasn't a problem. All of a sudden, now both PC's are playing up, asking me for the network user and password to get into each other. Entered the username and password and tells me they're incorrect. Done everything within the network and sharing centre to turn off password protected sharing, and allow windows to use usernames etc, but no luck! Can anyone tell me what is going on. Today a bit of good news, I can get into my Vista PC from my Windows 7 PC, but can't get into my Windows 7 PC from my Vista PC...

Logged out of my machine, logged back on, and now can't get into either machine from either machine - why sometimes yes and sometimes no?!

Hi, Please make sure that Everyone has been granted Read permission in the Security tab of the share folders. If this issue persists, try system restore to get back to a previous good time point to see how it works. Hope it helps. Hi, The link that "venhelp" provided is excellent just because it touches all the aspects of sharing files. Please make sure that all your computers are in the same "Workgroup". don't forget to reboot your computer after changing the Workgroup. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-vista/Join-or-create-a-workgroup Make sure you have a user account in all your computers with the same password and same username on all computers. If you don't use passwords, this may be a problem. Enable the "File Sharing" & "Network Discovery" from "Control Panel" and "Network & Sharing Centre". You should do the same on both computers. Now you should be able to see both computers in your network and access to shared folders. If these did not work for you. Try the following solutions one after the other by trying to access to your computers right after each change; -Disable your firewall and anti-virus temporarly (To see if there is any antivirus or firewall blocking sharing) -Try to access to one of your computers through "Explorer" by just typing the IP address. (Ex: \\192.168.1.10) (To see if there is any DNS problems) - Windows + R key to start "Run" and type the full UNC of the computer that you want to access. You should be asked for a username and a password! (Ex: \\VistaComputer\Share) - If you are asked for user credentials, this is good. Let's say your Windows Vista computer name is "VistaComputer". Then in "username" field enter the username like this "VistaComputer\username" and the password as it is. - If the last one works for you, you can open a "Windows Explorer" window, under the "Tools" menu, click on "Map a network drive". Make sure you check the box "Connect using different credentials." That's all I can think of for now. Hope this helps.Kubilay Elmas

When I get my network map up on both computers - it shows both computers connected to a symbol with a Question mark ? called "unknown"... then one computer is connected to the Gateway which is connected to the internet... this seems odd..

Thanks for the above. I've tried all these things (not sure about setting read permissions to Everyone though - isnt that a bit unsafe?! I never had those and it used to work fine so I don't see why I should change this). I report back: I find I can't access my computers from each other by typing \\Computername But I CAN access my computers from eachother by typing their IP \\192.168.1.2 etc... Why could this be? I could set up my router to make these IP addresses static and then it would work fine! But why?! I have got a feeling things started going wrong after I reset my router last week with my broadband password change, and I think this could have affected some network settings. Any router settings that could be causing this? e.g. TCHP, IP, LAN etc?!?! I'm just going to try from a second router I have in case it works! Thanks!

By the way, have now got same usernames and passwords on all computers, all the settings in the Network and sharing centre etc as above, etc.

GOOD NEWS - Once I changed router and installed my own router rather than the one my Internet Service Provider gave me (remember - they had reset it last week and the probs started happening after this), everything works fine... so obviously, the issue is not a Windows setting as described above, but a more technical network issue controlled by the router: one router allows the network access, the other doesn't... any idea what setting in the router may be causing the problem???

Hi, Glad to hear that you found the culprit. As this is related to hardware settings, it is recommended to consult with the device manufacturer for further research.
