Windows 7 & IE 8 combo causes a Windows Security dialog when a website prompts for authentication credentials
We are having a similar issue to some people where IE8 on Windows 7 fails to authenticate username & password access to websites. The main difference is that we are getting a Windows Security dialog box where the contents varies, depending on the type of authenication asked for my the website. Example 1: We have a link from a Sharepoint system to open a URL in a new browser window, and the prompt is for basic authentication username and password. In IE 8 we get ... Windows Security titled dialog box with text "The server <servername> at <URL> requires a username and password. Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentication without a secure connection)." and there is a greyed out OK button and a usual Cancel button. In Firefox on the same platform, the same action results in an Authentication Required window prompting for a username and password. Entering the username and password progresses to the URL required. Example 2: We have a secure URL (https) to access guest wireless access. You click on a Logon button on the site which then should prompt for logon information. In IE 8 we get ... Windows Security titled dialog box with text "The server <servername> at <URL> requires a username and password. There is a greyed out OK button and a usual Cancel button. In Firefox on the same platform, the same action results in an Authentication Required window prompting for a username and password. Entering the username and password progresses to the URL required. I must point out that this problem does not occur with IE8 on XP. I have tried adding the sites to Trusted sites and pushed the security level to Low. Enable Integrated Windows Logon is also checked, but this is not an integrated logon - we are expecting users to enter another set of credentials. I also tried a Disable LoopBack registry key, but to no avail. Thanks. Jason

Hi, According to your description, you can try other tests below: 1 Use Compatibility View to access these website 2 Delete the certificate in IE, then add the credential in Windows 7 Credential Manager 3 Remove the option “Enable Protected Mode” in IE\Tools\Internet Options\Security Hope that helps. I am currently experiencing a similar issue. One Windows 7 with IE 9 if I a user clicks to download an excel file they are receiving a window security prompt asking for a username and password. I have tried the solutions suggested already but it does not seem to correct the problem. We do not have this problem with users running XP on a previous version of IE. If the user clicks cancel on the dialog the report still loads, but obviously this is an unacceptable constraint to put on the client to tell them to ignore Windows Security warnings. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I noticed that the problem happens after the machine is re-imaged. The master PC can be working, I take an image, deploy that image and the destination PC has the problem. Something is happening during the imaging process.
