Windows 7 & 8 security issues
Hello All,
I know this is probably not the right forum to post this question - I am supposed to do some research in terms of security issues for Windows 7 & Windows 8. Such as locations where files may be installed, where log files may be stored, permissions etc.
Can someone please point me to some good articles I can read please? or an alternative forum?
Kind Regards,
Harriet

Hi,
For Windows 7, I think you can obtain some good articles in Microsoft Technet
Library, Wiki and
Blogs.
And for example, I think
What's New in Client Security is good to read.
Hope this helps.

Hi Again,
My initial question was very vague... For starters I would like to clarify what i want:
Our application is installed via NSIS. We would like to find out what the security measures are regarding:
1. what locations applications may be installed at
2. what locations log files may be written to
3. if NSIS can still make registry entries when it is executing our install script
If you can direct me towards getting answers to any of the above questions, please drop me a reply.
ANy help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Harriet,
The Microsoft Best Practice for Installations is to go under a folder within C:\Program Files for the main installation files.
Run time log files should go to a user writable location e.g. %APPDATA% or %Temp% or %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local
During an elevated install an application can write to whatever registry is required. If you use a deployment solution it's likely installing applications in an elevated state so it should have no problem writing to the registry.Blog: rorymon.com Twitter:
