Windows 7RC NAS connections Vs Vista 32bit
Hi,Windows 7 up and running for a few dyas now, connected to a small "workgroup" home network with 5 other PC's and 3 NAS servers.2 PC's XP and 3 Vista. NAS drives have been updated and can be seen by ALL machinesbut the Windows 7 machine will not access the NAS drives. It also has issues conncting to one of the XP machines (not that this is an issue at the moment - maybe another post).I can see all 3 NAS drives in the network windowand can PING them all from aCMD window.I have disabled the fire wall and checked all share options and all say I should be wide open! When I try and open a NAS, I get one of two messages, \\NAS_3 is not accessible. You might nothave permission,,,,,, A remote procedure call (RPC) protocal occurred OR \\NAS_3 is not accessible. You might nothave permission,,,,,, Network error (1208)I have tried to reduce windows 7 secrity levels with;-1.Click Start2.Click Control Panel3.Click System and Maintenance4.Click Administrative Tools5.Double-Click Local Security Policy6.In the left pane, click the triangle next to Local Policy7.In the left pane, click Security Options8.In the right pane near the bottom, double-click "Network security: LAN manager authentication level"9.Click the drop-down box, and click "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated"Needles to say this also did not work.Yet I can see the content of the NAS if I create a short cut on my desktop and chaneg the target to \\NAS_3\any_folder_on_my_NASOnly Valid folders are accepted. At the moment I'm playing with FTP - FileZilla, which allows me a bit better control, but this really does need to be sorted out.Why is this broken in Windows 7 and fine in Vista ? (both 32 bit) ?Thanks in advance.Thane

No it is not windows which is broke. You need to read the MANY posting here about this subject.Older Samba builds use an unsecure protocol. If you can not update the NAS boxes you can 'dumb' down windows.click the start button and type secpol.msc in the search function. Browse to "Local Policies" -> "Security Options". Now look for the entry "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it. Click on the dropdown menu and select "Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated". Apply the settings. Now try as for sharing with other windows boxes the is agreat "how 2" posted here under a thread about xp / windows sharingIn the Advanced sharing settings page of Network and sharing center, you need to have it set as Work/Home profile. Try -Enable network discovery-Turn on file and print sharing-Turn off password protected sharing-Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers

PLEASE READ MY FIRST POST BEFORE JUMPING IN !!!!++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I clearly stated that did not work, YET VISTA, out of the BOX does !ALL NAS boxes were updated to work with VISTA's enhanced security.WINDOWS 7 has broken what I had before.... there is a problem (OR MS dumb down VISTA without telling anyone). If anyone else is having this problem, please tag on to this so we can get it fixed ASAP. Thanks.

Hi Kerry, Thanks for the quick response. Just been to the machine (win7), it does not have Windows live installed that I can see. This is a spare R&D/development machine; all that its got installed is a sound card (creative) and TV tuner card (Hauppauge), Intel CPU and ASUS m/b. The windows 7 installation is clean on its own HD, this is NOT a VM or dual boot set up. Machine is tested and runs Windows 2k, XP pro, XP media center, Vista 32b Ultimate without any issues or tweaks lowering security settings. I have added a few programs but had this when the system was clean and as installed with all MS updates installed. I personally I cannot get my head around the short cut working, i.e. entering the full path, verses using the network folder route! Reading the forums, I see other issues with win7 networking, so I would not be surprised if this was not a small bug that needs a tweak. If you need more information, please get back to me. Thanks. Regards Thane

HelloI have been having the exact same problem, I have tried to troubleshoot this problem for over 6 months with different suggestions. None of them have worked and I had to resort to deleting Windows 7 from my computer and reloading Vista. If windows 7 does not work with older versions of Samba, then Microsoft should find an easy way around this problem to enable people to upgrade to the newer version of Windows. I just purchased my NAS less than a year ago, so the option to buy a new NAS so I can run Windows 7 is not in the cards. I am sure that in this economy that no one is going to buy a new NAS just to go out and purchase the most recent version of Windows when they finally got Vista working good, and XP is running perfect on most computers already.

Hi Afnetman,Thanks for commenting, I have been pulling my hair out over this, and it's really nice to know that it's not just me that's seen and having this problem. If ANYONE else has a problemrelated tothis, please add a comment to this thread, especially if you have a work around until Microsoft fix this bug. Thanks again.Thane.

ThaneBelieve it or not, I reinstalled Windows 7 (for the 4th time) and the first thing I did was create a shortcut as described above and it worked. I had to use the PUBLIC for the shortcut and then in the Samba website for the drive I had to create shortcuts to all the other directories in the drive. But i can finally access all the directories from the one shortcut.I wish you the best of luckJay

Hi Jay,The more I read through the forum the more you find people with the same problems, and so far there is no fix to this bug.I call it a bug, as I Vista had the same NAS issues when it was first released. This is when I updated my NAS software, and have not needed to touch Vista (including Vista Business which is supposed to be secure) and they all see my 3 NAS drives just fine out of the box. The more people that highlight this ongoing issue, the sooner Microsoft will react and sort it out. I have pre-ordered 2 copies of win7. They will stay in their box until they can read my boxes! No new systems will be built and reloaded with win7 from me until this issue is sorted out. If everyone makes the same point on here, then this bug will be addressed. Thanks for your input. Thane

Hi Just a quick note, there are other network issues out there, one of which was fixed by turning off "TCP/IPv6" Just tried it here, but still nothing.Even tried turning on NetBIOS, but still nothing. This is very frustrating to say the least !Thane

Hi All,Some good news, Microsoft does know about this BUG ! Looks like we will have to wait for a FIX. See below. (I found this after days of looking for a fix).RegardsThane.http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba-technical/2009-January/062827.html Hi! On Thu, Jan 15, 2009 at 11:10:55AM -0800, Joshua-M wrote:> I have a Samba 3 / OpenLDAP system working with 2000, XP/2003 and Vista> clients, but no go with 7, I will attach what information I have gathered. Jim Pinkerton asked me to post this message from Microsoft: Sincere apologies, but wanted to confirm that there is an issue with NT Domain support in Windows 7. We're trying to expeditiously track down exactly the issue(s), but the short of it is I wouldn't spend time trying to get this functionality to work. We'll get some sort of official notice out shortly (and I do mean shortly). Jim Pinkerton Microsoft

I have the same problem. I just recently installed a DNS-321 NAS with the latest firmware. It works perfect from 2 XP machines and my Vista Premium machine. Shows up fine in Windows 7 Windows Explorer under 'Network', but get the '..........access denied' dialog. Permissions on the NAS box are set to Everyone/Full. Have worked on this for a week without success. I have not tried uninstalling 'Windows Live Sign-In Assistant', but will do that next and report back. The acknowledgement from Microsoft is from January, so it looks like we are on our own. I will watch this thread to see if any of you advanced networking people can come up with a fix/setting (not a workaround). Thanks for all your input.WEDJr

UPDATE: I tried all the local policy changes with no success. Then I decided to try another 'Fix' I read in other threads: Uninstall 'Windows Live Sign-In Assistant'. Rebooted, instant success. Windows 7 still wants to add this hardware device as 'Network Storage' device, but fails. This doesn't effect the use of networing with the NAS device. I'll worry about that another time. This fix was so simple I can't believe I didn't try it earlier.Sony PCV-RZ22GDual boot Vista Prem/Windows 7 RCDIR-655 RouterDNS-321 NAS1 GB RamATI 9550Creative X-FI Extreme AudioThanks for all your help

Hi.As I stated in the first place, this is a fresh windows 7 install, build 7100 with all updates installed.I did not have windows live installed so could not un-install 'Windows Live Sign-In Assistant', so in th einterest of fixing the problem and trying out all suggestions, I have just installed windows live, then uninstalled 'Windows Live Sign-In Assistant'. Re-booted, but still nothing.Yet I should still point out that Vista out of the box (on 2 machines) talks to the NAS as they should.Windows 7 is BROKEN ! QEDMS, please sort this out ASAP ?Thane
