Windows 7Pro Client having File Access issue to SBS2003 Server shared folder
I am a consultant to a small firm using SBS2003 Server with clients running all WIN/XP. All is well until I replaced some client PC with WIN7 Pro. These PCs use MS-Office2003 (Word mostly) accessing their files via a mapped network drive. In SBS2003 I have allowed 'Everyone' to have 'Full Control'. They are having issues like: - denied access (they always have access right at the server) - or, file reported as READ only (and they always are allowed to edit those files) - or, Word would report "File is being locked by another user" - but it is NOT! - or, they start editing the file, when click Save, Word would say 'this file is READ ONLY', or would report some kind if 'Communication' error, shut down Word prematurely, and subsequently 'lost' the file totally! (I needed to restore the file from Backup disk) The above NEVER happened when they were WIN/XP Client PC users. I temporary gave them back their old PC (WIN/XP) and everything is fine (with those same files) My suspicion is MS-Office2003 running under WIN7 O/S. What do you think?? I have decided to upgrade one WIN7 PC with MS-Office 2007 to see whether this strange behaviour will continue or not. Or, do you think may be I should change 'Everyone' to the specific User Account Name instead (at SBS2003 server)? I am thinking this possibility because I have heard people say WIN7 is much tighter in security and hence causing the 'Access right' at the server to misbehave??? I can't see myself downgrade those new PCs from WIN7 back to WIN/XP!!!!!! Please help! Additional incident: I do not think this is really to do with file/folder permission...reson being: 1. when the users back using WIN/XP o/s, everything is OK 2. those files have always stored at the server (mapped as Shared folder), no permission or ownership has been altered 3. when the same user tries opening the same file again, randomly it will be accessible AGAIN (same file was reported as READ only or LOCKED by another user error message just minutes ago) I have also installed one user using Office 2007 to see if this strange behaviour would GO AWAY! ... No luck - SAME issue still exists. AP
