Windows 7: Lost admin rights (prob after trying homegroup)
HiThis afternoon I tried to install homegroup. When I did so I got a message that windows could not setup homegroup for this pc. (im not sure if this is relavant, but it is the last thing I did with windows before my problems started.) - At this moment when I try to go to c:\i get an access denied message. - When i go to c:\Users\Patrick then it shows my files and directorys. - When I open a word document from that directory it works (so I have read access). - I cannot make a new directory in my home directory.- When i start for instancemmc i get Windows cannot access...... error code 0x800704b3 After diagnose i get a error that troubleshooter could not start error code 0x80070005. (it happens with all windows utilities.- When i start safe mode it reboots after a secons (after it displayed the users)- When i try to enable the admin account in the command prompt it says access denied.- when i try to access settings with UAC, it does not respond.- When i start a program normal (like VS2008) it starts up, when i do it as administrator I get the same error as when im starting mmc.I upgraded my PC from Vista, and everything worked fine for around a 10 days.Thank god I have a backup from my old Vista machine. I cant wait long with this problem, but im willing to try some things out to figure it out. Hope anyone can help me.Regards,Patrick

update. I could login in the (i think it was called) domain controller problems option when booting F8. From there it was possible for me to get into the regedit. Now i turned of UAC. Things work a little better. Started MMC and could turn on the administrator account. Here I could change users, add users and everything, but still, when i go to the C:\ i dont have the right permissions. At this moment I still get loads of errors. Also as administrator i cant start eventvwr.Patrick

Solved it.In MMC i could go to manage the computer. There in disks, properties I could set the Owner of the disk again. From that moment everything worked again.

Also after that i turned on UAC again and it seems to work fine now.My guess is that the HomeGroup option changes the disk owner and when it failes to install it dont change it back....

Btw, is there any place to drop this as a bug? Or does microsoft read these forums to gather bugs?

I had the W7 beta up and running fine, then I installed the RC.. Nothing but problems since. The networking setup is a nightmare to try & get working.I have last all administrator priveleges, can't look at contents of drives, change anything, run troubleshooters, device manager or get into MMC. On top of that it screwed up my Vista installation on another seperate hard drive. This is a monumental screwup by Microsoft..I could sure use some help on this if anyone has figured this mess out.ThanksDallas

I tried the fix the way you posted and got most of my admin rights restored.. Thanks a million.I played around some more with permissions, etc in that area and I think I am going to be able to work it out.I did an image restore on my Vista drive & it works fine so far, I am installing ser pack 2 on it at this time.I will not play around with the networking & homegroup on the windows 7 drive until I see some fixes posted in here for problems it causes. It sure seems strange to regress from the beta to an ubstable rc but that's MS for ya.Thanks again for all your help.Dallas7:23pm addBack to no admin rights for many things again. I guess I will do a reinstall this weekend.

what a terrible bug -- Thanks for the suggested steps and though not all the steps matched, somehow there is enough info above to get back access to the boot drive c:

Hi, i have attempted all of the suggestions above and have met with no success. I have even tried to reinstall windows over the old install and it is denying me. Are there any other options on fixing this without reformatting the drive? I have also tried installing the hdd in question into another computer running 7 so i could pull the files off of it, however the second computer was unable to access the hdd as well.

Thanks for the fix .. win7 RC .. removed homegroup, etc ... no admin rights, etc .. When I rebooted into windows, I still didn't have the ability to browse my 2 drives (C: and D:) that had been shared. Looking at the security, I didn't mess with the ownership, I loked at the effective permissions .. there were no users or groups defined .. added Administrators, Authenticated Users, Users, and SYSTEM with the correct permission sets and all started working correctly again.

(This is an English translation from Google Translate) Hi There is a solution: Use a boot disk usb: Hiren Boot CD (remember to enable the boot sequence in BIOS) http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk Once connected with Hiren Boot: 1. Click on the local disk C with the right mouse button and reset the attributes of the disc (-s-h-a). An option that gives you the menu. 2. On the "security" tab, add permission "total control" to authenticated users and authenticated users with domain (domain \ users) 3. Restart the computer Greetings From Valencia (Spain)
