Windows 7, Speech recognition, Outlook 2003
Windows 7, Speech recognition, Outlook 2003 are not working well together on my system. Specifically, when I open outlook 2003, with speech recognition on, I get an error message in a dialog box. "An error occurred while trying to retrieve information from another program. Try working with your message again." When I close the box, it simply comes back on again. Sometimes, it is difficult to shut the whole program down because the box keeps coming on with the error message. I have searched in vain on Microsoft forums for a direct match to this problem, or for an answer. I have done detect and repair, which I thought helped. But the problem persists. I am running windows 7 home premium. I have a Dell Inspiron 1750 Pentium dual core T4400 @ 2.20 Ghz , 4Gig Ram, 64 bit operating system. In office 2003, I have Microsoft word 2003 set as the default editor. I cannot stand word 2007 and do not want to use it. I have used Oulook 2003 on my other computer (with XP) for over a year without major problems. I would appreciate any help resolving this issue.

Hi, Thanks for the post! How about you using Speech Recognition on other programs? Except the Outlook 2003? Did you use other programs that use a microphone while you use the microphone for speech recognition? According to the error message, it seems the outlook 2003 cannot retrieve the information. We’d better narrow down the issue. Meanwhile, you can refer to: Frequently asked questions about the speech recognition feature for Office. I wrote a long reply and pushed submit, but it was erased. I'll try again. Yes, when I was using XP, I have used speech recognition an all kinds of programs including outlook 2003. It routinely worked fine. It is when I got my new computer with Win 7 that the problems began. This problem only occurs in outlook 2003, not in any other program on my new computer. Whether I have the speech recognition on prior to opening outlook 2003 or after I open outlook 2003, as soon as I hit the reply button, or try to start a new post, the dialogue warning box begins to sound off. It will usually keep sounding off until I either shut off outlook 2003, or I shut off speech recognition. No matter how many times I turn speech recognition off and back on again, the same problem happens. So, I downloaded and installed open office and thunderbird to see if I would have the same problem. Speech recognition works great in those programs. No problems at all. (makes me wonder why I'm paying for Microsoft office, when I suspect that Microsoft will abandon this product just like they did frontpage and left thousands of people stranded without any recourse whatsoever.) As to outlook 2003 not being able to retrieve information, I will let you know that this problem only occurs when I'm trying to reply to someone or write a brand new post. Basically, the only real time that I can use speech recognition in outlook (i.e., to write letters to other people) is when it will not cooperate and all. I'm hoping there is a simple fix for this. Thanks for your help.Gary D. Collier

Hi, Does it happen in Safe Mode with networking? Press F8 when you start the computer to enter into the Safe mode, choose Safe Mode with networking. If it doesn’t happen in Safe Mode, I recommend you try Clean Boot to find which is the culprit. For the clean boot, please refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 Meanwhile, since this issue only happens on Outlook 2003, please also ask this question in Office Forum: Outlook IT Pro Discussions.
