Windows 7, Slow download speed, ... Please help
Hello, ... I have been reading the forum hoping to find a solution to my problem but so far, nothing. I bought this HP G61 loaded with windows 7. I noticed that the download speed was really slow - when I downloaded stuff from the 'net and from peer to peer programs. I am using wildblue for internet (it's not that, The comp tells me that it's speed is at 1Mbs, but when I try to download stuff - I get speeds of 3.2Kbs all the way down, Rarely I see speeds of 4.0Kbs. Now I have changed the following parameters: Receive buffers to 512, Transmit Buffers to 128, Speed & Duplex to 100Mbs Full duplex and the Driver is up to date. What am I missing?

Hi, Before you check the download speed, run internet speed check. -AJ

Hi, and Thank you for taking the time to help me. That said - Every time that I changed a parameter(s), I would run a speed test from speedtest.net and several from speedster. Both of them read 1.04Mbps - 0.90Mbps and the upload speed is dismal, at 0.05Mbps - 0.02Mbps. BUT, actual download speeds do not reflect that. I keep thinking that it might be something simple -and the upload is especially dismal. Changes done: Modem and all cables changed out, ... and again thank you!

Hello. Please remember that download speed is also dependent on how many others are downloading the same thing from the same site; very seldom will you reach anywhere near what your connection is capable of. Also - as to the peer-to-peer downloads: you aren't using uTorrent by any chance, are you? If so, you'll need need to change some settings to get any speed under Windows 7. In uTorrent go to Options->Preferences->Advanced->Disk Cache and place a check mark in the boxes labeled Disable Windows caching of disk writes and Disable Windows Caching of disk reads.

Hey there, ... I hadn't realized that all that was involved - I have never had a problem and when I saw the speeds say 3.5Kbs, I wanted to know more. I did the research and used my new found knowledge to speed up my XP machine. So when I tried this with my new Windows 7 machine I was greatly disappointed. It just seems strange that it works on one machine and not the other - One that is supposed to be "better" than the old one. My XP machine had speeds of 456Kbs and better. As for the Peer 2 Peer I am talking primarily about Limewire, I have never tried utorrent (I've heard horror stories) and I used to use Morpheus, and BearShare. But I have not used them in a while - I used them to test the speeds on my new machine but was disappointed as they didn't speed up at all. I keep thinking that I am missing something small and I simply need a memory jogger - Do you have a check list that you use to "speed" up your machine(s)?, ... Anything would be very helpful! Thank you, Edgar

Hi, Please take the following steps to check if the issue persists: 1. Boot the computer to Safe Mode with networking. 2. Please run the following commands in an elevated command prompt in Windows 7: netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled Additionally, you can also try this: Connect another computer to this network; or take this computer to another network and see how it works. Hope this helps. Regards, Sabrina Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thanks, for answering the thread! Now, I inputted all the info as you suggested, then I rebooted. I didn't notice an increase in speed, so I am thinking - I am on a satellite connection and this might be the best that I get - Having said that I will try this on another network and see if that improves the speed. Thank you for the time, Simply me, Edgar
