Windows 7, Libraries and Folder Redirection
Hello, I'm running into a problem using Windows 7 with folder redirection. Users are reporting that when they save a document to their folder-redirected (via GPO) Documents (via the Documents Library) that when they logon to another computer to access the document the file is there but it is a blank document. It isn't happening all the time because I can see successful files being saved - but I can also see these blank documents that are being created as well. My hunch is this has something to do with libraries but I'm having trouble consistently replicating the issue. We're using folder redirection with offline files for all users, Windows 7 RTM 32-bit, and Office 2007 SP2. Target for folder redirection is a DFS folder hosted a Windows 2003 Storage Server. Thanks, -Jeff

Does this assist with the issue to re-initialize the offline cache?http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/230738John

Nope, this is happening mostly on freshly installed systems, and I'm still getting reports of it. I'm going to have to replace folder redirection with something else if I can't fix this - any other ideas?

What does your GPO look like? This is what I'm using on my home network with Windows 7 clients and Windows 2008 R2 servers:Folder Redirection GPO User Configuration (Enabled) Policies Windows Settings Folder Redirection Documents Setting: Basic (Redirect everyone's folder to the same location) Path: \\home.capp.us\Users$\%USERNAME%\DocumentsOptions Grant user exclusive rights to Documents Disabled Move the contents of Documents to the new location Enabled Also apply redirection policy to Windows 2000, Windows 2000 server, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 operating systems Disabled Policy Removal Behavior Restore contents Favorites Setting: Basic (Redirect everyone's folder to the same location) Path: \\home.capp.us\Users$\%USERNAME%\Favorites Options Grant user exclusive rights to Favorites Disabled Move the contents of Favorites to the new location Enabled Also apply redirection policy to Windows 2000, Windows 2000 server, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 operating systems Disabled Policy Removal Behavior Restore contents Music Setting: Basic (Redirect everyone's folder to the same location) Path: \\home.capp.us\Users$\%USERNAME%\Music Options Grant user exclusive rights to Music Disabled Move the contents of Music to the new location Enabled Also apply redirection policy to Windows 2000, Windows 2000 server, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 operating systems Disabled Policy Removal Behavior Restore contents Pictures Setting: Basic (Redirect everyone's folder to the same location) Path: \\home.capp.us\Users$\%USERNAME%\Pictures Options Grant user exclusive rights to Pictures Disabled Move the contents of Pictures to the new location Enabled Also apply redirection policy to Windows 2000, Windows 2000 server, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 operating systems Disabled Policy Removal Behavior Restore contents Videos Setting: Basic (Redirect everyone's folder to the same location) Path: \\home.capp.us\Users$\%USERNAME%\Videos Options Grant user exclusive rights to Videos Disabled Move the contents of Videos to the new location Enabled Also apply redirection policy to Windows 2000, Windows 2000 server, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 operating systems Disabled Policy Removal Behavior Restore contents

What about share permissions? C:\Windows\system32>icacls \\home.capp.us\Users$ \\home.capp.us\Users$ CREATOR OWNER:(OI)(CI)(IO)(F) NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(OI)(CI)(F) BUILTIN\Administrators:(OI)(CI)(F) HOME\Domain Admins:(OI)(CI)(F) HOME\Family:(RX) HOME\Pluto:(RX) Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files EDIT: I saw this problem manifest before when I was setting all this up. AlthoughI don't remember the exact cause, it was related to a configuration issue.

Who's having issues; the students, teachers, or both?Asking because I see the group policy settings which apply to teachers and the permissions you pasted arefor the students.

Both. Sorry, I can paste the student GPO as well, but it is virtually identical.

Security filtering under the group policy scope includes the users/groups involved, correct? Also, is ABE (Access Based Enumeration) set up on your Windows 2003 server?Other than that, I can't think of anything else I messed with when configuring folder redirection. Although, if I think of anything I'll post it here when I get a chance as I've been busy fixing PCBs in a DLP TV.

Still no luck - I even disabled DFS replication on the targets and still we're getting 0-byte documents, even when they properly log off the system. I wish I could at least find someone else with the problem, being the only person on the internet with this issue makes me think I'm doing something wrong. -Jeff

You're running the RTM, correct? Because I remember it was awhile ago that I had the problem andI might have corrected it after moving to the RC or RTM. As far as servers go, I justupgraded my fileserver from theWindows Server 2008 R2 RC to the RTM last week.Anyway, I've been trying to think of anything else that might affect it, although there isn't much that comes to mind. The only thing I can currently suggest is to post your settings for offline files/caching on the share and the two questions in my above post.

No ABE, and the users are in the context (and the GPO is applying). I'm going to do some more investigating tomorrow, I'll double check the share settings although I'm pretty sure they are ok. I'll let you know and thanks for the ideas.

We have kind of the same issue... Win7 Enterprise Clients and IE8... redirected favorites folder, UNC is a DFS Path. First time I try to save a link, its a 0kb file. Second time ill overwrite saving it again its doing all well. But somtimes even the first time its working properly!!! So what could that cause? Security on folders and shares checked already, all works fine, as we have no issues with redirected documents (and pictures, music, etc.) folder. Any update would be much appreciated! :-) -chris

We are having the exact same issue. has anyone ever found a solution to this problem?

We have similar problem. Documents are redirected to a network share and when people open a file, edit it and save. Changes are not saved. However if they save-as, the file is saved normally.
