Windows 2003 R2 DC cannot connect to Windows 7 File Shares
All,I have a Windows 2003 R2 DC, a Windows 7 computer and a Windows XP computer. All computers are joined to my domain. Until Windows 7 came along I had no networking problems. Now the Windows 2003 R2 DC is not able to navigate the file shares on the Windows 7 computer. All computers have static IPs and are ping-able from the DC. I can even do a 'Net Use' command against the Windows 7 computer from my DC and see all the shared folders.Whenever I try to connect (using \\NETBIOS or IP) I get an error saying thecomputer isnot accessible or I may not have permission to this network resource.I have the firewall turned off on Windows 7.From my XP machine I can connect to Windows 7 file shares no problem. It is just from the DC that I can't connect. This wouldn't be that big of an issue but I have an SFTP server I run on the DC which connects to file shares on the Windows 7 computer. This functionality no longer works since migrating from Vista (I did a clean install of Windows 7).What gives? Any ideas?

Did you disable the firewall in Windows Server 2003? It may block the returned authentication data packs. How does it work if you disable the SFTP server on the Windows Server 2003 computer? How does it work when you access the shares on the Windows XP computer from Windows Server 2003?Arthur Xie - MSFT

Sice the Windows 2003 Server is a DC it does not have Windows Firewall. With the SFTP server off it acts the same way.Shares on the XP computer are seen fine from Windows Server 2003.

Please open gpedit.msc, locate to the branch Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\. Then make the change on the policy Network security: LAN Manager authentication level. Change to Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated. Then, see if the issue still occurs. Please try to access with both computer name and IP address from Windows Explorer. If the issue is not resolved, please let us know which user did you log on to access the Windows 7 computer. Also, please let us know the exact error of the error message.Arthur Xie - MSFT

That worked. Thank you very much.

Arthur,This solution worked for about a month but now the problem has resurfaced. To answer your questions above...1) I have tried to access my Windows 7 computer with IP and NETBIOS name. Both respond via a ping but I can not view the Windows 7 computer from Windows Explorer.2) The error I get in Windows Explorer is "\\NETBIOS is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.3) I am using my admin account when I logon to the DC to access the Windows 7 computer. This user is part of the Built-in Administrators, Domain Admins, Domain Users, Enterprise Admins and Schema Admins.Any additional ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

I have windows server 2k3 and I could access it with no problem with windows xp and 7 machines. Now I installed a few recommended security updates from MS on my win server 2k3 and since then, my win 7 machine will not access the server. When I try to access, the user and passwd box pops open, I enter the correct user and passwd, but it rejects it. I have tried with different users, created a test user and with every user, the same thing happens, it just rejects it. have any idea on fixing this issue? I'm trying to find what the last security updates instalations were but can't find it, any idea on that? Thanks,

Chris, did you ever find a solution to the connectivity issue? I am experiencing the same problem where my Win7 Pro laptop cannot connect to a Win 2003 Server even after making the LAN Manager changes... The funny thing is that I have 4 other servers I can connect to OK and they have the same configuration... :(
