Windows 2000 os system in a Windows 8 os world
Greetings and Salutations all, Okay, gonna bother y'all with asked question already, but maybe I can paint the picture better now that I've spent considerable time trying to get problem solved...but to no avail. I'm confident that a workaround is out there. Scenario: Have a Windows 2000 beater/boat anchor system at the house. Software (Win 2K) and the comp that it came on. Hardware is that old also...yes I know, and can hear the groans/laughter from here. Trying to get it to the point where my brother-law (him and sis have no money to upgrade/date) can/go online and play games on Yahoo. So: What I've tried: Win 2K has SP4 already on it, but I found an unofficial SP5. After I unloaded everything except the os from the system, I loaded the SP5. Found a browser that would work with Yahoo and W2K (Opera 9.5). Loaded that...went up to play games, nuttin'. Had to install a more current version of Java, so I found the version that would go into W2K (ver. 6) BUT it would'nt load. I've updated the drivers I could...NIC and the Intel onboard video driver...or at least the ones I could find So, Advice I Need: Suggestions as to how to make the available sys (lol, don't say boat anchor) work. It will/and has gone online, NIC still workin' hardwired to a router, I've spent 4 days and quite a few installs/uninstalls with researched (evidently not enough) software trying to get a workaround. Hopefully, this is the correct forum for this, if not I'll re-direct to the correct one on y'all's advice. What I want to do: Find a way to get the Java 6 to load, forget the online method...it don't. And, I need to know what Flash Player to load (I believe the version I can use is 10.x.x.x.x or something like that) and the proper paths for the needed updates and installations so that the machine/software/hardware can interface with the Yahoo site. What I'm gonna do: Besides puttin' a bullet in the case to put it and myself outta misery, is to keep trying the install/uninstall software method. More research on other sites, and have another cup 'o coffee so that I can try and understand the error messages that show the path where the needed files should be...and to try and do it that way. I don't want to crash the sys as there are no disks to recover with....arghhhhh! Thanks for any/all help/advice/considerations/your time to read this, horatio

Hi, Windows 2K is a too old system, some software would not run normally on it as some compatible problems. As this reason I would recommend you upgrade Windows 2K to Window XP, Windows 7 or Windows 8. Before you begin to upgrade, you must understand the system requirements for these operation systems. Requirements for Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865 Requirements for Windows 7: http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/products/system-requirements Requirements for Windows 8: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/system-requirements Regards. Spencer TechNet Community Support Sir, After some rootin' around the various self-help websites, some meditation, and finally some head banging, I have found a workaround that has enable me to get the machine to install the latest browser from (sigh...I know, it ain't MS) another manufacturer. Just needed to slim sys back to bare bones, install a couple of XP patches/updates, adjust some keys in the registry, and OUILA. Got it to the point that I'm able to rest comfortable now that I've helped the family out. The experience has brought back to me the reminders of what I used to do back in those days of working with the only OS that MS had. Good exercise in memory recollection...lol, took me 4 days but I got it. So, thanks for the info and reply. horatio
