Windows7 Boot partiton will not shrink
I have Windows7 pro in a 1000GB disk and Boot and Dump paration C: is at 350GB but data is only taking 54GB and it will not allow shrink to smaller size so I can restore to a bootable SSD. I ran checkdisk chkdsk with no errors and defrag is at 0 % but it doesnt allow me to make the partition smaller. Any ideas? Thanks!

Any errors or reports in the Event Viewer for this action? Saying it doesn't let you doesn't describe the why it doesn't let you, which is gnerally addressed in an error log.

There are some files/folders that will block your shrinking intentions. First, disable "Virtual Memory" and "System Restore". Then, move "\system volume information" (folder), "\hiberfile.sys" and "\pagefile.sys" out of the way (you must unhide them first, then move them to another location than your system drive/partition, or just delete them - if you are really sure you can do that without losses). Now, you should be able to shrink your system partition more than before. But don't forget: Afterwards, you must either restore the moved files to their original place, or set any pointers so the system still can find them. If you don't do that, you may have gained space in exchange for a less functionable Windows."I think there is a world market for maybe five computers. (Thomas J. Watson, Sr.)

After Installation I Moved the Pagefile.sys virtual memory off the boot partition but that still leaves the hyiberfile.sys and with Virtual memory off and all power settings not allowing sleep or hibernation the file is being accessed and I cant move it. Where is it at that I disable the System Restore? I dont see it or know where it is on win7. thanx

I could not get something that had its hooks into hiberfile.sys so I also did stop the paging and backup but it wouldnt budge - I found this to work and it has actual instuctions to follow that I posted here at: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprogeneral/thread/d1ee5b9b-b755-46ad-96bf-ec35c1188f68

Unfortunately - with both the pagefile.sys moved to another disk and hiberfile.sys erased I still only have less than 60gb of data on the boot disk but its current partition size is 350gb and I would like make it as small as possible but can not see the reason for no space available to further shrink. anyone have a process I can use to further shrink this disk partition?

"Where is it at that I disable the System Restore?" http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/3187/disable-system-restore-in-windows-7/ "anyone have a process I can use to further shrink this disk partition?" Have you tried DiskPart?

I downloaded a 30 day eval of perfectdisk 11 and if gives you a visuallike the old defrag used to and I moved a few files after deframentation and went from 350gb partiton C: to 50GB so now I get to put boot disk on a SSD :-) Windows 7 sucks no less than vista did and daqy one vista I had 1000 errors on a preloaded Gateway all forewarded to MSoft with nothing resembling help rather more like dialing 911 causing something is dying and being put on hold- then disconected -- then redail - hold - no answers - They diied. Microsoft couldnt rally around a turtle sleeping intime to encircle and test it before it walked 100 miles or died unfed.
