Window Update cannot install several recent security updates returns error code 80242014
I had this problem come up as it goes to restart during the first stage my computer reboots as if it crashed. First few updates KB2286198 from 8/3/10 and KB978886, KB982214 from the batch on 8/11/10 were able to be installed by manually downloading it and installing one at a time. The following, KB982799, using the download and install alone drops like the initial problem. With 7 more updates to go would like to know what I could do if anything to resolve this. I have Windows Vista Home Premium service pack 2 32 bit installed. Thank you for your time.

Temporarily disable the installed antivirus/security suite and see if doing that allows the updates to install. 80242014 indicates that the system needs to be restarted to allow the files in use to be updated. There is a strong possibility that 3rd party software is interfering with the files being updated.

Hi Tsavi, To troubleshoot this issue, I would suggest prepare a Clean Boot to install the update. Let's disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: 1. Click "Start", and type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". 4. Click "OK" to restart your computer to Selective Startup environment. 5. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We may still manually run these programs later. Does the issue re-occur? Please post back for further research. Thanks for the help. I think it allowed them to go through. Though don't understand why it stopped allowing it in the first place.

Hi, If windows update works in clean boot, certain application from the startup list may have conflict with Windows update. To find out the root cause, you can enable half of the start up items, restart to check the result. If the issue reoccurs, the root cause lies in the enabled items. Repeat the method on the remaining items until figure out the root cause. Hi, Re: Laptop will not install Security Update for Windows Vista (KB982214) will Microsoft send a patch or new update that works? My Toshiba running Vista will not install Security Update for Windows Vista (KB982214), I'm no computer whizz and wondered if Microsoft will send a patch or new update to replace it. I hate to think of my computer being vulnerable but when I read all the suggestions above I'm too frightened I'll wreck my computer. I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks, Margaret Mid
