Win 8.1 backup error 0x807800c5

I get this error when trying to backup a system image to a NETGEAR RND4000 NV+.

Searching through the various forums I have found a lot of information which points to the fact that Windows 8.1 broke the system image backup by not allowing backup to any Linux based storage device.

All the other forum questions which have been answered either predate Windows 8.1 or do not refer to the Windows 8.1 problem. One answer suggested that users suffering from this problem should write to Microsoft and ask them to reverse the change they made.

Is there any way to find out if the change is going to be reversed any time soon.?

There are workarounds but most are high time consuming. One suggestion  was to back up to a Windows 7 machine and then  backup the file to the NAS from there. If windows 8 is going to be anything like a success something will have to be done or this will delay the acceptance of Windows 8 in large enterp

Hi,

As you said, this problem To backup system image to Linux based storage, here is a blog may be helpful:

Windows Server Backup failed with error "The version does not support this version of the file format":

In addition, the other thread which similar with yours, you can take it as reference:

Thanks for the two links. Unfortunately they both refer to the problem with Windows Server 2012. It is surprising that MS has not taken action to resolve this for Enterprises who use WinServer2012 as it must be difficult for sysadmins to resolve.

I did find a reference to a KB article which talks about how to disable SMBv3 and SMBv2. But it warns that this should not be thought of as a permanent solution.

Sorry I have lost the link but searching for 'disable smbv2' will get it.

I have discounted their solution as unworkable and am switching to an alternative backup process for my small number of Windows 8 machines.

Alan put a mind set to install windows from scratch on a drive wich is formatted with bigger sector/clusters than 4kb after this no problem with backup on a n.a.s.

beware the drive needs to be active and primary otherwise windows install 8 will refuse to install...

and don't format with windows 8 install. because you''ll end up again with small sector/clusters...

it worked for me!!
