When I start IE8 in WIN Ultimate X32 RTM, 2 iexplore.exe start. All icons on the desktop are now frozen. If Iright click on the desktop, nothing happens. When I close IE8, the 2 iexplore.exe do not stop. When I stop the iexplore.exe's through task manager, the desktop is freed up and the icons now work. When I start IE8 again, it shows the previous IE8was terminated unexpectedly.

jp4 - I would start by looking at what you've got loading at the startup. Click on the Start Orb, type MSCONFIG and hit Enter. Look in the startup tab for anything that looks like a URL, or some oddly named executables. You might also want to check for viruses or other malware. The behavior you're posting about sounds like something along the lines of an adware type thing.

Hello, I am also facing same issue. I have disabled almost all of the plugins/add-on in IE8, but whenever I start it and then close it, its process is not closed. And the desktop is locked up. When killing IE (iexplore.exe) process from Task Manager, desktop start to work normally. So far I am not able to find a solution to this one, and have to use FF or Chrome. BTW, I'm using Win7 RTM Ultimate 64bit. Being a developer, I mostly have to use all browsers for testing. I will appreciate if anyone can help me out on this. jp4 - I'd try checking the registry - under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Runand HKCurrentUser\\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run- for anything odd that might possibly be launchingthings.Also, did you happen to notice Windows launching this from thestart or did this start happening after you've installed something...?And if you start up in Safe Mode - do you see the same behavior?

First, I suggest you disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps: Clean Boot ------------- 1. Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, and then press Enter. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. What is the result? If the issue persists, you can try booting into Safe Mode with Networking. 1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. 2. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode with Networking, and then press Enter. You can also reset IE to check the results. Go to "Internet Options" by running inetcpl.cpl in the Search bar. Click on "Advance" tab. Now, click on "Reset" button, and follow the commands. Please also deselect "Enable third-party browser extensions". Good luck!

I have had the same problem for the last 3 weeks - fixed it by checking what BHO (browser help objects) were enabled. I disabled the Google Toolbar Notifier BHO via the Tools/Manage Add-ons. Now when I start IE8 both iexplore.exe start as before but when I exit IE8 both iexplore.exe stop. Hope this helps.

I know this is an old topic, but it helped! Removing Google Toolbar completely from IE8 has solved the problem of the inactive desktop. I never used it, and didn't even realize it was on there. Thanks!
