Win 7 Ultimate Upgrade fails on Vista Home Premium
I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP2 & tried to Upgrade to Win7 Ultimate 32 bit on a Sony Vaio and it fails. Upgrade advisor says I'm OK to upgrade. It then went into an endless restore loop and I couldn't get back into Vista. I managed to find a fix for that online and I'm back on Vista. Whats the deal? I DO NOT Want to do a full install - thats why I bought the upgrade I have too many files and other apps to reinstall. I thought this was supposed to be New & IMPROVED.Plese some one help!!

Hi BrianBird, Besides uninstalling McAfee, I also would like to suggest you update the BIOS and the hardware drivers first. In order to avoid the possible software conflicts, you may start the upgrade installation from Clean Boot. Regards, Arthur Li - MSFT

"Besides uninstalling McAfee, I also would like to suggest you update the BIOS and the hardware drivers first."Is there an easy way to do this. I'm not really sure about how to go about this. Any info on what exactly you are suggesting I do would be greatly appreciated..Is there anything else besides this I should uninstall or disablethank you...

In many cases, the constant rebooting issue is due to a bad graphics driver. Try the steps listed here: http://windowsfixup.com/2009/04/windows-7-installation-fails-constant-rebooting/

Hi BrianBird, To update the hardware drivers, you just need to refer to Sony website, search for and install the drivers for your laptop. Since BIOS versions vary among different motherboards, I suggest contacting Sony Support to upgrade the BIOS to the latest version. Regards,Arthur Li - MSFT

Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions but swing & a miss on all of them. All my drivers\BIOS is up to date, Unistalled McAfee as well as a few other programs, set up the clean boot. This time it got all the way thru the install and at the last second the message popped on the screen " upgrade was not successful restoring previous version of windows" Please anyother ideas on this? I really, really, don't want to do a fresh install - I wish they would truly - thoroughly test this before releasing to the public

BrianBird,You are hoping to do an upgrade to a older system. which by the way did you check to see if they have win 7 drivers for the Sony Vaio? upgrading an older used (has had changes made by who knows what) OS fails more than not.It is not a windows 7 issue, it is a issue with the Sony Vaio or something you have / had installed / updated / failed to update. There is no way mirocosoft could do anything about your setup, YOU need to do the work here.find out what is loading at startup and start disabling it.HiJack this can help with that...BUT as you have asked some basic questions here I woudl suggest you find a local tech to do this for you. Messing around with programs like HiJack this can cause real issues with working PC's.
