Win 7 Ultimate Network Discovery Issue
I'm a software developer, experienced on Windows platforms but new to Win 7 (I skipped Vista altogether), so forgive me if I'm asking a question that has a simple answer. I'm running a network with a domain, and in all my previous versions of Windows (I've had everything from NT through XP and now Win 7 on this network), if I go to Network Places and drill down through Windows networks to my domain, I see all the machines on the network pretty quickly. In Win 7, the first time I open explorer, or if I've not opened explorer in a while, my Network shows no machines. Same thing in a file open or file save dialog if I click on network. In explorer, I will eventually see the green bar across the location box at the top of the window start to progress S-L-O-W-L-Y, until suddenly all the machines on my network appear. This can take a minute or longer. The network has two domain controllers. A physical box running Windows 2008 ServerR2 64-bit and a Windows 2000 Server that was a physical box at one time but has been virtuallized and is running under VMWare's ESXi (my goal is to create a Win Server 2008R2 virtual machine and decommission the Win 2000 Server, but I haven't done that yet). I've tried turning off file synching (saw that recommendation in a post somewhere) to no effect. This is really untenable; I hope there is a way to fix this! Any thoughts would be welcome. JP

Hi, This network performance issue can occur by several factors, such as incompatible NIC driver or third party programs. To troubleshoot the issue, please perform the following steps. 1. Upgrade the NIC driver and browser the network machines to check the result. 2. Restart the machine in Safe Mode with Networking and open Network folder again. Is the performance quicker in this mode? I've upgraded the NIC Driver; no joy. It behaves exactly the same in Safe Mode with Networking. Essentailly, you go through about 1.5 minutes of discovery any time you have not accessed the network in the past 5 minutes. In other words: Bring up a browser and click on Network and you see nothing but the progress bar moving for about 1.5 minutes. Close the browser and open a new one right away, click on Network an the machines are listed without discovery. Close the browser, wait five minutes, open a browser, click on Network and you are back to about 1.5 minutes of discovery. Thanks Novak, but so far no resolution. JP

The "Network Folder" is populated by a component known as "Function Discovery", there are several services that feed into Function Discovery to populate the folder. The most likely cause would be something on the network causing WS-Discovery to have an issue. Please test by disabling the SSDP Discovery service on the Win 7 system and let me know if this changes the behavior. Regards, Clark Microsoft Online Community Support
