Hi, to see the cause of Windows 7 update / SP failures, we must look for error messages in the following log files: Please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy all files to your document folder, also copy the setupapi.dev.log from the folder C:\Windows\Inf, the "C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log" and the file "C:\Windows\winsxs\poqexec.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't upload it), zip all files into 1 ZIP and upload the zip to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here. Actually I've been so busy at work, I haven't gotten to this yet. Thanks for the info. I will do this at some point in the future; once I take care of the alligators. jp

Hi jp, Based on your CBS.log, I found the errors like following: 2011-04-12 20:55:52, Info CBS Failed to load the COMPONENTS hive from 'C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS' into registry key 'HKLM\COMPONENTS'. [HRESULT = 0x800703f9 - ERROR_NOT_REGISTRY_FILE] 2011-04-12 20:55:52, Info CBS Failed to load WCP DLL. [HRESULT = 0x800703f9 - ERROR_NOT_REGISTRY_FILE] 2011-04-12 20:55:52, Info CBS Failed to initialize the Core DLL: C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_655452efe0fb810b\cbscore.dll [HRESULT = 0x800703f9 - ERROR_NOT_REGISTRY_FILE] 2011-04-12 20:55:52, Info CBS Failed to initialize CBS Core. [HRESULT = 0x800703f9 - ERROR_NOT_REGISTRY_FILE] I recommend you do a System File Check, then running the System Update Readiness Tool, after that, reinstall the SP1 to check if it works. If it doesn't work, upload the CBS.log again for further research. Regards, Miya TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. When I try to run the system file checker (a sys admin) it returns 'windows resource protection could not start the repair service'. I have an intel processor, why do I see 'C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack' in the cbs log and when I run troubleshooter for windows update, it shows it fixed all and the architecture details shows amd64? Yes, windows update downloads updates and they all fail on installation since the last successful install on 3/24/11 of Update for Microsoft OneNote 2010 (KB2493983), 32-Bit Edition

Hi, Thanks for the update. Please click Start, input services.msc in the search box, press Enter key. On the right pane, make sure these two services are enabled: Windows Module Installer Windows Installer Then follow these steps to do a SFC with offline options. 1. Insert the Windows 7 installation DVD into the DVD-ROM; Click Exist if the auto-menu pops up. 2. Run cmd as administrator, then input the command sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=c:\windows (C is your system drive) Now check if it works. Regards, Miya TechNet Subscriber Support in forum.
