Win 7 RTM to full license after launch
Will it be possible to change an RTM (current) install to a fully licensed product by using the change product key function after the official launch?

No. After purchasing an edition of the final version of Windows 7, a "clean install" is required. Please see: Can I do an In-Place upgrade from Windows 7 Release Candidate To Release Code?Carey Frisch

Not RC but RTM - I am a TechNet subscriber.

Sorry, I was not being clear. I did a clean install of the RTM of Win 7 that I downloaded from TechNet. I used my TechNet product key. I have already ordered Win7 for all of our computers. I am asking if I can take new product key (in October) and replace the TechNet key so that I have a licensed Win 7 (without reinstalling).

The Technet RTM download IS the final product - so yes... You can swap out the product key and reinstall - with one gotcha. You have to have the SAME edition installed - i.e. Windows 7 Home Premium (Technet) -> Home Premium (Retail). You can't, however, go to a lower edition (Starter, Home Basic) using the new key. That would require a clean install. On the other hand, you would likely need to do an In Place Upgrade with the product key to get to a higher version (Professional, Ultimate). That would leave your data files and programs in place, but would reset Windows 7 to it's default state - with the new enhancements from the higher tiered edition.

Will it be possible to change an RTM (current) install to a fully licensed product by using the change product key function after the official launch? Yes as long as the retail key is for the same version as the current installed version i.e. ultimate, starter etc.

> I did a clean install of the RTM of Win 7 that I downloaded from TechNet. I used my TechNet product key.So Your installation is fully licensed allready! And the price of it is already includedin the price of TechNet subscription. So I can see now reason why one needs to purchaseone more copy of windows for this PC just to replace the existing legal key with anotherlegal key.

Vlad - But a Technet Plus (or MSDN) license isn't exactly the same as a retail or OEM license. If I recall correctly, the TechNet Plus license is for long term evaluation of a product - not meant for a production environment.
