Win 7 RC1 with onboard Reaktek wired NIC losing DNS after resuming from sleep
I am having an issue with internet connectivity with my Win 7 RC1 installation. I have a Realteck 8168b wired lan onboard nic. When my computer wakes after sleep I lose internet connectivity. Specifically I lose DNS ability. I don't know if there is something else not working, but I have diagnosed the primary problem as DNS. After wake, Win7 shows that it restores my internet connectivity (shows internet access in the taskbar), but my browsers freeze and I cannot reach any sites. I can renew my ip addresses, and it shows successful in ipconfig. I can ping my Windows Home Server by ip address, but not by name (normally I can ping it by name). I can also access my routers web page by ip address. I have tried everything mentioned here including using the Realtek drivers from Windows update, installing latest Realtek drivers from Realtek (both true Win 7 drivers). I have changed the settings power settings for sleep in the adapter settings, changed the hybrid sleep setting in power management and media settings there too. I have tried changing TCP settings recomended here too. I have tried restarting the Windows DNS client service after sleep etc. Nothing has worked. I will be sending information to the DHCP blog as well from the DHCP Trace tool posted here.

Please check if the computer turns it off in Sleep Mode. Please open Device Manager, under "Network Adapters", double-click on the entry of the adapter. In the opened session, click the "Power Management" tab. Please make sure that the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked. If the issue still occurs, please try to update BIOS. If the issue persists, please also try to upgrade the network adapter driver. If the issue persists, please temporary bypass the router, and properly set IP settings. Then check the result again.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Here's my results: Please check if the computer turns it off in Sleep Mode. Please open Device Manager, under "Network Adapters", double-click on the entry of the adapter. In the opened session, click the "Power Management" tab. Please make sure that the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked. >>Yes, already did all of this, no change. If the issue still occurs, please try to update BIOS. If the issue persists, please also try to upgrade the network adapter driver. >>I have already tried all drivers - the ones that come in Win Update and newer ones on Realteks site. If the issue persists, please temporary bypass the router, and properly set IP settings. Then check the result again. >> Tried assigning a static IP address, no change. Connected computer directly to Cable Modem, no change. Tried cable modem with static IP and DHCP. Anything else? I am available for any troubleshooting or anything you might want to solve this problem. I am an expert Windows user/administrator. Arthur Xie - MSFT

It seems that the issue is in the DNS client. The network adapter does not work properly after the system resumes. This is a hardware compatibility issue. We may need to wait the manufacturer to release new drivers. Meanwhile, as a workaround, you may prevent the computer to enter Sleep Mode. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Yes, this is what appears to be happening. DNS does not work after resuming from Sleep. Unfortunately Win 7 is not generating any errors or log info that could help us.

Hi Arthur Xie,just linking with this topic i wonder which is the best practice for dnscache , shutdownOnIdle=1 or ShutdownOnIdle=0 ?thx in advanceRR Hi RR, This Registry key is related to DNS cache. If you have a DNS cache on local computer, it would take fewer time when you access a site by its name which is already included in the cache. Therefore, the default value of this key is "0". The system will keep the DNS cache.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I also have this problem except my NIC uses a Generic Marvell Yukon chipset

I had this problem too and used a workaround for that which looks like this:Hkey_local_machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Add a Multi_SZ_String named DNSQueryTimeouts and put these values 4 8 8 16 32 0 after you type 0 press enter and Click OK.this might work for ya'll as well IMO...Usually the standard values(12 2 4 8 0 something like that) gives you much more DNS timeouts after waking up....WARNING: Dont perform any of those steps above if you dont know exactly what you are doing and it might cause damage to you PC.hope this helps for those who know what they'r doing..Best regards,RR

ok, this DNS registry entry doesn't work for me. And I have the problem occurring after about an hour of use every single time. I have also tried: disabling power saving options on the whole computer disabling power management on the nic a different nic (Realtek though) disabling/enabling interface updating drivers to the latest Marvell ones. A packet sniff on the interface shows there is no DNS query being made in response to an NSLOOKUP. -it still will do host file name resolution - netbios name resolution \\DCNAME does not work
