Win 7 Pro Error when trying to Join a W2K3 server domain
When i try and join a W2K3 domain i get the following error. "An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain"I can Ping the server name and ip address. I can map a drive to the server from the Win7pro PC. I have checked TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service is started. I have configured the network card with the DNS server IP address. I have even turned off the Windows Firewall. Still get the same error, spent 4 hours researching this issue and am still stuck. This should be a basic setup.

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Check your DNS settings on the server. 2. Ensure the client is pointing to the correct DNS server. 3. Boot the system to Clean Boot and then try again: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 If you have another Windows 7 client which is not in a domain, please join it to this domain and check how it works. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Thank you for your reply. The link you sent is incorrect for performing a clean boot but i found the article in the knowledge base fyi http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 I have tried a clean boot and this does not resolve the problem. I have purchased 3 laptops and none of them will connect to the domain, all have the same error. Any other ideas, have had this problem for 1 week now and no closer to resolving the issue.

Hi, Thank you for your update. At this time, please try the following: 1. Check if you can ping the DC and DNS server with computer name and FQDN name. 2. Reset Windows Firewall settings to default and see if it works: 1) Click the Start Button. 2) In the search bar type “wf.msc” and press Enter. 3) Right-click the root “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on Local Computer” and choose “Restore Default Policy”. 4) When the prompt appears, click Yes. 5) Reboot the computer and check the issue. 3. Ensure that the computer is using the correct DNS server for name resolutions and check the following Please run the following command in a command prompt: >nslookup >www.microsoft.com (You can also try other URLs.) Will the correct IP address be returned? Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Thank you Nicholas for you support, the problem is now resolved. 1. came back with valid ping response. 2. Fixed the problem and i could connect to the domain immediately afterwards. Previously attempted to turn off the firewall through the control panel, this made no difference. using wf.msc i restored to default policy and it worked straight away. I am unsure why the windows firewall needed to be restored to the default policy as the laptop was straight out of the box and should already have been set to default policy. many many thanks and kudos to you for your assistance.
