Win 7 Pro - Win 2003 Domain
New computer - Window 7 Pro - 32 bit. It can ping the server, and can connect to the internet, but it CANNOT join the domain. When you attempt to join, you see the normal message "that an account is present in the domain, do you want to use that?" but as soon as you click "Yes" you immediately get a message saying that the network path was not found. Of course this is wrong, because you can ping the server and the first message shows the second one cannot be correct. Anyone seen this and have any suggestions? Thanks.

Being able to ping the DC does no mean that you can join the domain. Your client uses DNS to find a logon server. Is your client set to use the DC as its only DNS server? What happens if you run an nslookup for your full domain name?Bill

Hi Bill, Thanks for answering. Yes, my client uses the DC as its only DNS server. If you type nslookup(enter) at a command prompt on the client machine, you get: Default Server: mars2.lmr.com Address: 192.168.0.1 All of which is correct. Is there a way to join the network from the command prompt of the client or server? I could try that. The only thing I have tried so far today is to eliminate the hub that was after the switch. No change. Thanks, again, Larry rapp at lmr dot com

If you type nslookup LMR, you get: *** mars2.lmr.com can't find lmr: Non-existent domain If you type nslookup LMR.COM, you get: Server mars2.lmr.com Address: 192.168.0.1 Name: LMR.COM Address: 192.168.0.1 Is that what you mean? Thanks, Larry

that's correct, mars2 is your logon server. How are you trying to join the domain? What are you putting into the domain field? It should be your domain user name, password for your domain and then LMR.com. Let us know how that works out for you.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

I put lrappaport which is the user name, then the password, and LMR.com which gets displayed as LMR.COM. There is a message saying "An account setup for PowerSDR-PC (the computer name) has been found in the domain 'LMR' Would you like to use this?" I click "Yes" and then I get a dialog box that says "Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred: The network path was not found". Of course the path was found or I couldn't have received the first dialog. I have tried multiple variations including Administrator, LMR\Administrator, LMR\lrappaport, etc., but all give me the same thing. I would try joining the domain from the cmd line, but I don't know how. And, of course, there's no guarantee that it would work. Help!? Out of ideas. -- Larry

Hi, Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP in Windows 7: 1) Go to Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections. 2) Right-Click on the connection and choose Properties. 3) Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Version 4 in the list. 4) Click Properties, and then click Advanced. 5) On the Advanced TCP/IP settings windows, go to WINS tab. 6) Under NetBIOS setting, click Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and then click OK. 2. Start the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service: 1) Log on to the client computer by using an account that has administrator 2) permissions 3) Click Start, click Run, type services.msc (without quotations) in the Open box, and then click OK. 4) In the list of services, double-click TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service. 5) In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply. 6) Under Service status, click Start to start the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service. 7) When the service is started, click OK, and then quit the Services snap-in. 3. Boot the system to Clean Boot and then try again: How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Just so you'll know, there's no need to put LMR.com in the domain field, just put LMR as the DNS server should resolve that for you.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

Thank you Nicholas. That worked. I've been working on this issue for several days. I had already enabled Netbios over TCP/IP but I had not started the TCP/IP Helper Service. Since I could already connect to the internet, I knew there probably was not an issue with the network card. I'm not sure why I need to run Netbios over TCP/IP, but at this point, I'll be happy to get it working! Thanks again. -- Larry

Thanks, I knew that, but frankly after spending so much time on this issue, I was ready to try anything! I am not sure why Windows 7 is so much different than XP Pro which I use everywhere else and Vista Business which is on my laptop. -- Larry

Hi Larry, Thank you for your update. Glad to know this works! Regarding the relationship between this issue and TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service, I would like to share the following with you: "Network Location Cannot be Reached" Error Message When You Try to Join a Domain Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT
