Win 7 Networking MS Office files are Read Only files
We have a new Win7x64 computer with MS Office 2003. We have networked computers with WinXP and Office 2003. MS Office 2003 and Quickbook Pro 2007 work well on Win 7 if all files are on the Win 7 computer. But
with Win7 networked to XP, we can see and open the files, but all Office and QB files open as read-only. I've tried many on-line recommendations including
Changing permissions Removing read-only checkboxes
Establishing exact duplicates of users/passwords on the different computers
and many others
This seems to be a frequent problem based on the message traffic. How can I remove this read-only so I can use the files?

Hi,
This issue may occur if any one of the following conditions is true:
·
There is an issue with negotiating SMB signing from a client that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) to a Windows 2000-based server that requires SMB signing.
·
Another process has the file open and locked.
I would like to share the following article with you, hope it can give you some hints:
Files on network shares open slowly, open as read-only, or you receive an error message
Office 2003 and 2007 Office documents open read-only in Internet Explorer
Hope it helps.

Thanks, Alex. I tried both of these solutions. Unfortunately, they address only Office 2003 and 2007. I did a regedit on 2003, but there was no similar "Internet" item in regedit for Win7 install of Office 2003.
So, the read-only problem still exists when Office 2003 on Win7 is trying to use Office files over the local network. I'm surprised nobody else hasn't had identical problems.

Anyway what solved our problem was by turning the details tab off in Explorer (this is under Windows 7 - click Organise where the menu bar is normally, then Layout, then make sure Details is unticked - and also Preview by the sounds of it.)
Doing this immediately fixed our problem. It seems that with the details tab visible it keeps the file open for too long and Office apps can't then access it. This also explains why people were having problems opening documents they had created themselves
and nobody else was using.
