Win 7 Hangs at Starting Windows, Vista runs fine
I have a computer that has been running Winy7 for a few months with no problem. Two days ago, i booted the compute in the morning for the first time and it hung at the Starting Windows Screen. I was able to boot using Safe mode. I tried repairing my installation and also to go to last known good config, but none of these worked. I still could not boot outside of safe mode. I then proceeded to reinstall a fresh install of Win7. the installation appeared to go fine, but took a very long time (2hrs+) at the configuring your system screen. On the first boot after install it would hang on the Starting windows screen. I then went through and unpluged/disabled all unused devices....even tried different memory modules and a new hard drive but could never get Win7 to install...same thing. I even ran the HP diags/extended memory test and everything passed. THinking there could be somehting wrong with my install disk, i tried my other computer wiht the same hard drive and it installed fine. I have even installed Fedora Core onto the drive and it works like a champ. Interestingly, i took my copy of Vista w/SP2 and installed it and everything has gone perfect with the same hardware that was giving Win7 troubles. Any idea what could have happened such that Win7 no longer works? Dont think this is a Hardware problem.

also, i have not added any new hardware to the system or upgraded any firmware. I thought maybe Windows update installed something that my HW didnt like which is why i went back to do a fresh install.

I had some what similar situation. Windows 7 worked fine for almost a year on 5 years old E-Machine(Athelon processor). All of a sudden yesterday, in the morning, during first bootup of the day, it stuck in 'starting window' screen. I had to hold power to shut the machine down. On startup, windows 7 gave me a chance to recover from the last recovery point.Machine ran fine all day until I shut it down late at night. Same problem this morning and this time machine would not recover. I re-started the machine using safe mode and manually recovered the machine using the recover point that worked yesterday. There were two new recovery modes were found after this one. Checking the event when I was in safe mode, I noticed.... The error message was found 'Modification to System configuration file' or failure with System configuration file. All I remember is I installed Microsoft Sync 2.1 application, the day before, the machine stopped booting. Since I had used an old recovery point after the recovery, some 23 MS updates were done during shutdown at night after first successful boot up, machine running fine all day. This may have caused the second day recovery problem. I removed the Microsoft sync 2.1 software. Turned off auto update. Ran full scan on the drive. Ran cleanup on the disk. Machine boots fine now. To be safe I created a new recovery point, just in case I need it. Configuration -- E Machine T6216 1.5 G Memory 500G hard drive/160G hard drive 9500 GT grahics card

Hi, Please try the start up repair first. Also, if the failure is caused by the unfinished update. You may use this command dism.exe /image:your system partition:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions tp revert the pending actions. In addition, You may insert the Installation Disk, then boot in Windows RE to perform the System Retore to retore the system to a usable working point.
