Win 7 Enterprise post SP1 upgrade no longer updating DNS record via DHCP
I have a test Windows 7 Enterprise x86 computer that is part of a workgroup (same name as windows domain) that is no longer accessible via name after I installed SP1. The computer is receiving all IPv4 settings via DHCP. I have tried rebooting the Windows 7 client, releasing and renewing the IP address, running IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS and NBTSTAT -RR from an elevated cmd prompt and none of these have registered the name! The DNS and DHCP services is in the same subnet as the client (and Ethernet segment). Both services are running on the Windows Server 2003 SP2 (x86) DC. No changes have been made to the server, the DHCP server is set to register the DNS names. There is one additional DC, it is also in the same subnet, and is running DNS as well, DNS on both servers is AD integrated. The Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 client has these TCP/IP v4 options set, no changes were made manually (unknown if SP1 setup may have changed settings) - Obtain an IP address automatically - Obtain DNS Server automatically Advanced settings, DNS tab - Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes - Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix - Register this connection's address in DNS Advanced settings, WINS tab - Enable LMHOSTS lookup - Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server .... All of the settings displayed when running IPCONFIG /ALL appear correct. It's my understanding that the Windows 7 client will tell the DHCP server to register it's DNS name since the option "Register this connection's address in DNS" is enabled. Since the DHCP server is performing the name registration on behalf of the client, it's shouldn't matter that the client is not part of the domain and lacks credentials to directly update the DNS server. The DNS server is part of the domain, and has always had the dynamic updates set to Secure only. DHCP scope options that are set on the server and confirmed are received correctly on the Windows 7 client are - 003 the default gateway - 006 DNS server (only 1 server set, no backup - IP address same as DHCP server) - 015 DNS Domain name workgroupname.local - 044 WINS/NBNS Servers 2 servers outside my windows domain set - 046 WINS/NBT Node type 0x8 IPv6 is enabled, but I don't have any specific IPv6 infrastructure setup. I think SP1 may have re-enabled it, I'm not sure if it was disabled before. Other network bindings include the Microsoft Network Monitor 3 Driver (I have this installed for testing), Virtual PC Network Filter Driver, and standard Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. Windows firewall is enabled, but is set for Home or work network, and is allowing file and printer sharing, remote desktop and other services to work (but I currently need to use IP address not name to connect).

Fistly, please delete the DisableLoopbackCheck key from registry. Then, I recommend you use the Network Monitor to capture the network traffic. 1. Download the Network Monitor 3.4:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=983b941d-06cb-4658-b7f6-3088333d062f&displaylang=en 2. Log onto the machine, right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch the NetMon. 3. In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4 window, click Create a new capture tab... 4. In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window. 5. After that, press F10 to start NetMon. 6. Try to re-produce the issue on the computer. 7. Go back to the NetMon window and press F11 to stop the NetMon. 8. Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file and upload them to the SkyDrive in a public folder. The NNTP gateway has been down for days (still down), so I have been unable to respond. Is the DisableLoopbackCheck change you susggested documented here in methhod 2 at "You receive error 401.1 when you browse a Web site that uses Integrated Authentication and is hosted on IIS 5.1 or a later version" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861 ? I do have the Network Monitor 3.4 installed (it was present pre SP1 upgrade), I'll check and see if it is still working and if there are newer builds required for use with SP1. I'll probably have an update and possible packet captures by Fri 3-18-2011.
